Milt Palmer Photographs (PH-00430)

Abstract

The Milt Palmer Photographs (approximately 1950-1991) contain original and reproductions of photographic prints taken by Milt Palmer, a photographer who worked for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and later under the division known as the Las Vegas News Bureau. Palmer captured celebrities and entertainers performing their Las Vegas shows, athletes in various sporting events, and various political figures. The majority of photographs in the collection are from approximately the 1950s to 1960s and some are signed by entertainers. The collection also includes digital reproductions of approximately half of the images found in the collection.

The Milt Palmer Photographs (approximately 1950-1991) contain original and reproductions of photographic prints taken by Milt Palmer, a photographer who worked for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, a photographer who worked for the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, and later under the division known as the Las Vegas News Bureau. Palmer captured celebrities and entertainers performing their Las Vegas shows, athletes in various sporting events, and various political figures. The majority of photographs in the collection are from approximately the 1950s to 1960s and some are signed by entertainers.

Images contained in the collection depict athletes at various sporting events, including golf, tennis, and boxing; beauty pageants; weddings; and McCarran Airfield. There are also images from various Las Vegas hotel and casino anniversary celebrations, particularly the Sands Hotel and the Sahara as well as entertainers from a wide variety of shows, including comedy, solo acts, and group performances. Individuals represented in a significant portion of the collection include Liberace, Eddie Fischer, Connie Stevens, Phyllis Diller, and the Kim Sisters. The collection also includes digital reproductions of approximately half of the images found in the collection. The collection also includes certificates of appreciation addressed to Palmer for his work with the Las Vegas News Bureau for the city of Las Vegas.

Biographical / Historical Note

Harland "Milt" Palmer (1925-1996) was a longtime resident of Las Vegas, Nevada. Born in Shelby, Ohio, Palmer served in the United States Navy during World War II. Palmer lived in Las Vegas, Nevada for forty-one years with his wife, Melody and daughter, Patricia "Patti" Ann Palmer. He worked as a photographer for the Chamber of Commerce and later the Las Vegas News Bureau, capturing celebrities, athletes, political figures, and entertainers during their visits to Las Vegas for shows, events, and long-term residencies.

Milt Palmer passed away on November 10, 1996 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Materials were donated in 2020 by Marilyn Gubler on behalf of the Las Vegas Archive; accession number 2020-072.

In 2020, Tammi Kim transferred the digital content off an external hard drive. Sarah Jones created access copies by converting TIF files to JPG, rehoused the collection, and created a finding aid in ArchivesSpace. No further work was performed.
