Abstract

The Jean Olen Papers (1994-2008) document Olen's career as a taxicab driver in Las Vegas, Nevada. Materials include Olen's personal taxicab driver's permit, medical examiner certificate, and other placards found in taxicabs regarding common questions, such as tipping, no smoking, and airport fees. Also included are newspaper clippings about taxicab drivers in Las Vegas, Nevada and four issues of Trip Sheet, a local magazine for taxicab, limousine, trolley, and shuttle drivers, which features letters to the editor written by Olen.

Biographical / Historical Note

Jean Olen moved from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina to Las Vegas, Nevada in 1987 with her husband and two children in 1987. Olen was working with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and transferred to McCarran International Airport, but found herself out of work due to the FAA's hiring freeze for the fiscal year of 1988. Olen and her husband eventually found jobs as taxicab drivers later that same year. At the time, Olen was one of five female taxicab drivers in Las Vegas, Nevada. She worked as a taxicab driver for eleven years before retiring in 1999 due to health complications from a heart attack. In 2008, Olen published Las Vegas: True Stories by Taxi Jean which contains stories about her work as a taxicab driver. As of 2021, Olen lives in Auburn, California.
