Abstract

The collection is comprised of captured websites and Twitter data related to the mass shooting that occured at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada on October 1, 2017. Captured websites are primarily comprised of articles and news stories from local, national, and international news media outlets. Websites were captured periodically from 2017 to 2018. The collection also includes Twitter data associated with the October 1 shooting that were captured via concurrent queries to the Twitter API for all Tweets containing the term “vegas” occuring September 29, 2017 to October 7, 2017. Also included are files containing tutorials for how to curate and analyze Twitter data which reference the 1 October Twitter dataset for illustrative purposes.

Biographical / Historical Note

On October 1, 2017, a gunman opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino on Las Vegas Boulevard onto 22,000 people in attendance at the Route 91 Harvest country music festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. 58 individuals were killed, and over 800 people injured. The gunman, Stephen Paddock, died by suicide.

Acquisition Note

The Twitter data was collected by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries in 2017 using twarc; the archived websites were collected by UNLV Libraries in 2017 and 2018. Twitter data tutorial files were archived by UNLV Libraries in 2023; acession numbers 2017-128, 2017-145, and 2023-028.

Processing Note

The content in this collection was identified using two methods: Twitter datasets were captured in 2017 by Thomas Padilla who used used twarc to search for and capture all Tweets containing the term “vegas” occurring between September 29 to October 7, 2017 before 5:00 PM PT.

UNLV Libraries Special Collections and Archives staff selected websites to archive based on a list of frequently shared links represented from the Twitter dataset. Archived websites were captured, preserved, and managed using Archive-It, a web archiving subscription service. Archived website captures were managed periodically by Tammi Kim from 2017 to 2018 and the descriptions added to the finding aid in ArchivesSpace. Twitter tutorial PDF files were downloaded in 2023 and the descriptions were added to the finding aid.
