Scope and Contents Note

The Southwest Oral History Association Records contain the records of the Southwest Oral History Association (SOHA) from 1981 to 2020. Records contain agendas and minutes from the executive board committee, financial records, correspondence, photographs, and planning documents for SOHA's annual conferences. The records also include conference planning and committee files kept by Sarah Moorhead, member of SOHA who also served as the organization's president from 2008 to 2009 and digital photographs from the 2013 conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Also included are conference planning and committee files kept by member Indira Berndtson, who served as the organization's secretary from 1990 to 2000, as well as her personal files from later conferences and photographs from various SOHA and OHA (Oral History Association) conferences.

Biographical / Historical Note

The Southwest Oral History Association (SOHA) was founded in 1981. SOHA's membership includes historians, educators, genealogists, archivists, librarians, and other individuals interested in oral history across the Southwestern region of the United States including Arizona, Southern California, Nevada, and New Mexico. Institutional members of SOHA include universities, historical societies, and museums with oral history programs.

SOHA offers professional development and educational offerings to its members including an annual conference. SOHA's annual conference offers sessions on both general and professional interest. SOHA also offers training workshops that focus on practical approaches to the practice of oral history.

Acquisition Note

Materials were transferred in 2009 by Rose Dias from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque and in 2020 by Sarah Moorhead; accession numbers 2009-21 and 2020-107. Materials were donated in 2022 by Farina King; accession number 2022-104.

Processing Note

In 2009, Joyce Moore processed the collection. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Joyce Moore revised and enhanced the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards and entered the data into ArchivesSpace. In 2021, Tammi Kim minimally processed the 2020 addition during accessioning and updated the finding aid. In 2022, Sarah Jones processed the 2022 addition, rehoused the material, and updated the finding aid.
