Valerie Pida Trust Records (MS-00890)

Abstract

The Valerie Pida Trust Records (1987-1993) are comprised of records documenting efforts by Edward "Ted" Quirk, an attorney and a board member of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Foundation, to establish a trust for Valerie Pida, a UNLV student who had battled Hodgkin's lymphoma since the age of thirteen. Pida was a student at UNLV from 1985 to 1991 and was a cheerleader for the Runnin' Rebels basketball team. The records include correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial statements, and receipts that document the establishment and activities of the foundation, which operated until 1993.

Scope and Contents Note

The Valerie Pida Trust Records (1987-1993) are comprised of records documenting efforts by Edward "Ted" Quirk, an attorney and a board member of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Foundation, to establish a trust for Valerie Pida, a UNLV student who had battled Hodgkin's lymphoma since the age of thirteen. Pida was a student at UNLV from 1985 to 1991 and was a cheerleader for the Runnin' Rebels basketball team. Quirk set up the Valerie Pida Trust in order to raise funds to provide financial support for Pida's medical expenses and to help support her family. The records include correspondence, newspaper clippings, financial statements, and receipts that document the establishment and activities of the foundation, which operated until 1993.

Biographical / Historical Note

Valeria Ann Pida was born on July 2, 1967 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pida was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of thirteen and battled the disease while attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) from 1985 to 1991. Pida was a cheerleader for the Runnin' Rebels basketball team and cheered in the team's NCAA Final Four appearance. In 1991, the plaza outside the north entrance to UNLV's student union was dedicated to Pida. She passed away on November 10, 1992, at the age of twenty-five.
