Abstract

The Nancy Wier Papers on Rock Art in Southern Nevada (approximately 1930-2003) contain photographs, notes, research, and publications focused on rock art (rock writing) found in the Southern Nevada Region. Wier founded the Southern Nevada Rock Art Enthusiasts (SNRAE) in 1992, and the photograph albums document trips across Nevada, Southern California, Utah, and Arizona. The photograph albums are grouped by site location, and the description was taken directly from Wier's albums. The majority of the collection documents rock writings in Southern Nevada.

Biographical / Historical Note

Nancy Wier was born June 23, 1942 to Henry and Jamie Parish in Murfreesboro, Tennessee. She lived in Germany as a child while her father was a colonel in the United States Air Force. Wier graduated from Ripple High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. She married Edwin Wier in 1961 and had two children, David and Carolyn.

In 1972, Wier started working as a poker room manager at the El Cortez and Silver Nugget in Las Vegas, Nevada. She fell in love with the Mojave Desert and rock art (now called rock writing) and in 1992 founded a group called "SNRAE," Southern Nevada Rock Art Enthusiasts.

Wier passed away December 21, 2022 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Materials were donated in 2023 by Carolyn Cervello; accession number 2023-052.

Processing Note

In 2023, Sarah Jones rehoused the collection out of 3-ring binders and into folders, wrote the description from the album onto the folder, and created the finding aid in ArchivesSpace. No additional work has been done.

Appraisal Note

Acquired by Visual Materials Curator, Aaron Mayes, as part of UNLV Special Collections and Archives holdings on Southern Nevada history and the environment. Two boxes (12 items) of personal photograph albums were given back to the donor at the time of processing.
