The UNLV University Libraries Photographs of the Development of the Las Vegas Valley, Nevada (2016-2020) are comprised of digital photographs captured as part of the Special Collections and Archives Building Las Vegas project. Digital photographs shot in the Las Vegas Valley, Nevada, include color images of street scenes, neighborhoods, developments, land use, housing, flood control, parks, traffic patterns, and parts of the tourism corridor including casinos and hotels.

Biographical / Historical Note

Aaron Mayes has been a photographer in Southern Nevada since the early 1990s starting at the Henderson Home News, then spending nine years at the Las Vegas Sun. Prior to working with the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) Libraries Special Collections and Archives as the Curator of Visual Materials, Mayes photographed campus life, social events, athletics, and promotional images as part of UNLV Photo Services.

In 2016, the UNLV University Libraries, Special Collections and Archives launched the "Building Las Vegas" collecting initiative to collect and preserve evidence about urban development and the built environment in Southern Nevada. As part of this effort, Special Collections and Archives Curator for Visual Materials, Aaron Mayes, began photographically documenting the region's built environment.

Acquisition Note

Materials were received in 2018 and 2022; accession numbers 2018-057 and 2022-113.

Processing Note

The digital collection files were transferred from photographer Aaron Mayes in 2018. Karla Irwin processed the collection and wrote the finding aid. In 2022, Aaron Mayes transferred additional digital files. Sarah Jones processed the digital files and updated the collection inventory.
