Biographical / Historical Note

The Jean Nidetch Care Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) was established in 1991 as a result of a University and Community College System of Nevada (UCCSN) Regents’ ad hoc committee on the Status of Women report that looked at issues related to gender equity in the academic environment. One recommendations from that report was the establishment of a Women’s Center which would provide services, events, and a safe environment supporting women attending UNLV. The Women’s Center specifically aimed to provide support for non-traditional students. Mary Ruth Carleton was hired as the Women’s Center Coordinator in 1991 to raise funds to create the Center’s physical space and underwrite staff positions.

In 1993, philanthropist and businesswoman Jean Nidetch provided a $1 million donation to build the physical space and set up a scholarship endowment. The Center was officially dedicated and named as the Jean Nidetch Women’s Center in 1994. In 2020, the Center was renamed as the Jean Nidetch Care (Campus Anti-Violence Advocacy, Resources, & Empowerment) Center to primarily focus on helping all students facing power-based violence, regardless of gender. The Care Center operates from an anti-oppression framework to provide care for the UNLV community through creating a supportive and inclusive environment to address issues related to power-based violence through educational workshops, referrals to social services, and events. The Care Center also works with the President’s Advisory Committee to make recommendations on best practice measures to identify, respond, and prevent interpersonal violence.
