Abstract

The Las Vegas News Bureau Photograph Collection consists of black-and-white and color photographic prints, negatives, and slides depicting Las Vegas, Nevada from approximately 1940 to 1989. The images primarily depict hotels on the Strip in Las Vegas, Nevada, including Caesars Palace Las Vegas Hotel and Casino, the Flamingo Hotel & Casino, and the Desert Inn Hotel and Casino. Also included are images of the convention center in Las Vegas and Cashman Field, as well images of entertainers performing on the Las Vegas Strip. The collection consists entirely of photographic reproductions.

Biographical / Historical Note

The Desert Sea News Bureau was founded in 1947, but was soon renamed the Las Vegas Review Bureau in 1949 after it became a division of the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce. The Las Vegas Review Bureau ran promotional campaigns for the city of Las Vegas, Nevada until the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority absorbed them in 1992. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) was founded in 1955. The LVCVA owns and operates the Las Vegas Convention Center and advertises for the area.

In 1984, the Las Vegas News Bureau allowed UNLV Special Collections and Archives to reproduce the images; accession number 84-1.

Processing Note

In 2020, as part of an archival backlog elimination project, Ryan DiPaolo wrote the finding aid and entered the data into ArchivesSpace.

This collection is comprised of reproductions. Originals are held by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
