Biographical / Historical Note

Kathy Augustine served in the Nevada legislature from 1993 to 2006. Augustine was born May 29, 1956 in Los Angeles, California. In California Augustine received her Bachelor's Degree from Occidental College and her Master's Degree in Public Administration from California State University, Long Beach.

Augustine came to Las Vegas in 1988 while working as a flight attendant for Delta Air Lines. In 1993 she won the assembly seat for District 12 running as a Republican. She then was elected to the Nevada Senate for three sessions. In 1998 Augustine was elected State Controller, the first woman to hold the position. In 2004 Augustine was impeached for unethical campaigning in her 2002 reelection campaign. Despite being impeached she was allowed to remain in office as State Controller because her lawyers argued her crimes did not affect the people of Nevada, and were not the sort of crimes an official is removed from office for. Augustine continued her to work as State Controller and was running for State Treasurer when she was found unconscious in her Reno, Nevada home. She died four days later on July 11th, 2006. While initially her death seemed to be from natural causes, her husband was later convicted of her murder.
