AKAteen Report
The Akateens have been busy! They are making positive strides and impacting die community on several levels during the month of February.
•
The Akateens participated in an art exhibit, “The Magnificence of Nature” with artist Frank McBride. Thirty-two AKAteens, family and friends viewed the exhibit. They spoke with the artist and participated in a two hour presentation by the artist on technique, inspiration and vocation. He rewarded each question with a signed print.
•
The AKAteens participated in a Multicultural Show hosted by Rancho High School. They were among groups showcasing the art of music, dance and precision stepping. Twenty AKAteens participated. This affair was attended by local political and Clark County School District dignitaries.
•
The AKAteens were invited to participate in the Clark County Water District’s Black Histoiy month celebration. They participated in two of the three shows. This event featured local and Water District talent in storytelling, poetry, song, interpretive dance, African love and precision stepping. The AKAteens along with the Sigma Beta Club sponsored by the men of Phi Beta Sigma, Fraternity Inc. were the only two youth groups invited. The Water District provided a catered soul food meal, certificates and letters to the High Schookfor each participant. Twenty-five AKAteens participated.
•
We have included a Calendar of events for March, April, May and June for the young ladies. It is the group’s desire to celebrate Senior Graduation with some form of evening celebration with the graduates, members of the Sorority, family and friends.
Respectfully subnutted,
Donnyss Rucker and Domini Calloway Advisors

It must be bourne in mind that the tragedy of life does not lie in not reaching your goal. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It is not a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disgrace to reach that stars, but it is a disgrace to have no stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim, is a sin.

Because of the sweet spirit of Soror Sandra Stewart-Bass who contributed $100 to the Akateens the 4 participants were given $25.00 each in the form of a scholarship. Our beautiful Basileus, Soror Billie Rayford donated silver boxes lined in velvet to our participants.
Special Thanks to Sorors Ethel Archibald, Annette Craighead, and Sandra Stewart Bass. They provided printing, calligraphy, monetary support and were dance partners at the event for children whose mothers could not attend. Special Thanks, also to Ehraeda Rucker, daughter of Soror Donnyss who choreographed step show steps, parade steps and dance routines for Akateens dates, fathers and mothers.
I have intervened in 6 parent conferences, 4 school conferences, numerous intervention phone calls with girls, parents and their boyfriends. This year we lost no active members to teen-age pregnancy. We had one suicide attempt.
8 of our 12 seniors are attending 4 years colleges
3 are attending Junior Colleges
1 is attending Beauty College in California
1
joined the US Marine Corps
3 of our graduates were Akateens for 4 years (9-12 grade)
2
were members for 3 years (10-12 grade)
3
were members for 2 years (11-12th grade)
4
were members for their Senior year only.
The 3 remaining advisors attended ALL functions. There was never a function or activities were the advisors were not present. The 3 remaining advisors spent $2,189.02 of personal funds to support this group. The figure does not include gas amounts, picking up and bringing girls home after events, functions or meetings. Paying for Parade, and step-show outfits and shoes for children of parents unable to afford the clothing. Feeding them at events and functions are remaining circling back to make sure all is clear and there are no walks down lovers’ lane.
2 recommendations:
1.
That the Akateen youth group take a hiatus for 1 year to give Theta Theta Omega Chapter the opportunity to plan a viable and workable plan of action devoted to mentoring 60 plus young ladies.
This plan needs to include a
•
A budget of more than $100
•
A committed committee of more than 3 members
•
By-Laws
•
Rules and regulations
•
Liability insurance that covers our participation with minor children at events, functions, and , meetings
•
Safe meting place
•
Inclusion in Chapter scholarship program
2.
That $100 of the 2003-2004 Committee funds be presented to Candice Hatcher daughter of Soror Dorothy Hatcher who graduated with a 4.4 grade point average and is attending the college of William and Mary in Williamsberg, Va.
Respectfully submitted,
