as they do not state whether or not these flows are to be applied to the maximum day, maximum month or annual average. A widely used formula, developed by Kuichling, gives more conservative results. This formula, expressed as ft - 700_i/5p » results in a fire flow of 6,060 gpm for the urban area population of 75,000 persons. It is considered that both reliable and reasonable results are secured if the fire flows obtained by this formula are added to the average hour of the maximum day, and if sufficient storage is provided to maintain this flow for a period of five hours. The fire storage thus computed is 1.82 million gallons. Total storage for fire and operation on the maximum day 1S70 is thus 8.82 million gallons. For conditions other than the maximum day the storage required for hourly variations in flow is reduced, thereby increasing the storage available for fires. The amount of storage for various operating conditions and the estimated duration of the fire storage(based on the fire demands computed by the NBFU and Kuichling formulae) are as follows: Condition Total Storage - 8.82 MO Duration of Storage-hrs. of Flow Operating 1970 Storage MO Fire Kuichling Storage MO.
