' MONTHtY 7|00 JUN 1969 ^ IRV TERRY WILL CHAIRMAN THIRD SPORTSMENS WORLD AWARDS EVENT I Irv Terry, president of Wilkins Regulator Co., Los Angeles, will serve as chairman of the 3j~d annual Sportsmens World Awards honoring Hqll of Fame sports figures, to be held at the Sands ELGIN BAYLOR (left), captain of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Rudy La Russo (right), San Francisco Warriors, look over the Hall of Fame trophy along with Irv Terry, who is chairman of the Sportsmens World Awards to be held June 28 in Las Vegas. La Russo is co-chairman of the event. Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev., on June 28. The annual event, attended by more than 1,500 guests, attracts the world?╟╓s most famous sports figures. Some of the prospective honorees who have been nominated for 1969 are Bob Feller, from baseball; Rocky Marciano, boxing; Sonya Heine, ice skat- ing; Jack Kramer, tennis; Sammy Baugh, football;" Emil Zatopek of Czechoslovakia, and Bob War- madan, track and fiield. Art Linkletter will act as master of ceremonies for the important affair, held as a charity event for the City of Hope, when the victor will be pre- sented. The event will be televised on a national basis from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m. PDT during the presentation on June 28. Irv Terry, long active in sports circles, including the ?╟úFight for Lives?╟Ñ boxing event, heads Wilkins, which has been manufacturing water pressure regulators for home-and industry since 1904. Culmination of the 4m* will be the Sportsmen?╟╓s World Awards Presentations pn June 28, at the Sands Jlotel In tog Vestas. The annual event, sponsored by the City of Hope?╟╓s Sports- ! men?╟╓s Club, bestows the covet- ed ?╟úVictor?╟Ñ statue on its hon- orees, who are chosen by a blue ribbon national selections com- mittee of leading sportswriters and sportscasters across the country. Alcindor, who will make his pro debut this season as a mem- ber of the Milwaukee Bucks of the National Basketball Assn., | is a three-time unanimous All- American. He led the UCLA Bruins to three straight national titles. As Outstanding Athlete of the Year, Alcindor will be honored with hall of famers of a bygone era, whose own championship performances have withstood the test of time. All proceeds from the annual event go to aid in the battle against catastrophic disease. This year?╟╓s presentations cere- monies, hosted by Art Linklet- S^er and featuring celebrity AZUSA, CALg HERALD TW 4,002 guest presenters, will be syndi- cated^ for national television by- Metromedia Producers Corp. Trans World Airlines, official carrier for the event, will fly the honorees and other disting- uished guests to Las Vegas from around the world.
