It will be -a musical and Kanin will also direct. Romy Schneider, the beautiful young Viennese star, has been signed to share billing with Gene Kelly in Lufeardis, which will be filmed in Germany this summer. Kelly and Sheldon Reynolds are co-producers. MAY 11 / MOULIN ROUGE ySammy Davis Jr.?╟╓s attainment of jfne-man-show status never was more Convincingly demonstrated than when /he opened a three-week roost in Frank bennes?╟╓s spot Saturday with a 65-min. act that not only packed the place, but had a line serpentining around the block both shows. On deck, Davis never really built to any climax; he worked on a high plateau all the way * there were no lows and no lulls. His rhythm-tapping and his amaz- mgly faithful and vivid impressions re- main the keystone of Davis?╟╓s turn, but along the route he sings a score of songs, and whether they are satiric impressions or uptempo throwaways his phrasing and delivery are loaded With showmanship. One thing is ever noticeable in the manner Davis works,- he can sense the type of material and/or entertainment an audience as a whole digs the most?╟Ñ and respond ac?½ cordingly. Highlights of the tremen- ' dous repertoire are his Jekyll-Hyde bit, c.Blrth Of The Blues,?╟Ñ takeoffs on Sinatra, Brando and Satchmo and, of course, the heel - and - toeing, which now includes flamenco. As a chaser, he a close-in combo session and belabors the drums ,and vibes. Preceding, standup comic Bob Mel- vin strings out his so-so gags a bit took ong. The Donn Arden production num- betshave beenr^fu^S from the usual! three to just Big Ben Beat?╟Ñ for Davis?╟╓l engagement. It gets the bill off to at bright, eye-fillmg start. Dick Stabile?╟╓s^ band does superb backstopping job 1 especially on Davis?╟╓ intricate cues ijf ?╟÷w. a.?╟ s .
