Temple Beth Sholom THE BULLETIN TEMPLE BETH SHOLOM June 2002 INSIDE THIS ISSUE ARMDI Fund Update 2 Rabbi's Message Cantor's Message Under the Dome Membership Corner Women's League Men's Club Religious School News 7 Fashion Show Recap 8 Donations 10 Membership Corner 11 Calendar of Events Schedule of Services 20 Temple Beth Sholom is a Conservative Congregation affiliated with The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism Sivan-Tammuz 5762 Vol. 2, No. 6 From Outgoing President Sandy Mallin Reflections on Leaving Office It is not incumbent upon you to complete the work; but neither are you free from doing all you possibly can. -A vot 2:21 These words, the wisdom of our sages...although written thousands of years ago, were my guide through the challenging six years of my presi-dency. I am pleased and proud to sum up our accomplishments as we end this year and begin 2002-2003. Temple Beth Sholom has the greatest clergy in its 55 year history. Thank you Rabbi Goodman and Cantor Friedman. I consider myself lucky to have worked with you during my tenure. We welcome Bob and Judy Mirisch to our congregation. After six years of saying, "If we only had an executive director...," I am happy to announce that we have hired Bob to assist us in the smooth operation of our Temple's business. Our present board members, and those who have served on the board over the past six years, have been devoted to the Temple, hardworking and supportive. I cannot thank these men and women enough for our success. To Helene Rosen, my sincerest thanks to you for your constant support. Helene has been my right hand for six years. She, along with Mary Ann, Bobbi and Bonnie, has at-tended our functions and programs, always ready to assist, and always with enthusiasm. From a preschool with 20 students on Oakey to close to 100 next year... I congratulate D.J. Jensen and thank Marci Murdock for their efforts. Our Religious School has grown from under 40 students at Oakey to 150. I thank Jacob Raijman and Ayelet Blit, and look forward to an even more successful year in 2003. Aye-let will be heading the Religious School as well as "Mommy and Me" and adult education. I also must acknowledge Dee Glick and Dr. Steve Leibowitz for their many volunteer hours. And where are all these programs housed? In this magnificent building! You all built it! I thank you for all your support, both financial and spiritual. This congregation is incredibly supportive of our needs. I must acknowledge the fact that the capital campaign raised close to $10 million?more than any Jewish institution in Las Vegas has ever raised. In addition to the capital campaign, we are raising funds for the Warsaw Ghetto Memo-rial. Over $50,000 has been raised to date, and at the same time, in Israel's time of need, we have raised over $150,000 to purchase ambulances for Magen David Adorn. After six years as president, one would think it would be difficult to step down. It is not so for me...not when I have the opportunity to pass this gavel to such a fine successor. I have the greatest confidence that our new president, Jeff Zucker, as well as the execu-tive board and new board members, will carry our Temple to newer and greater heights. As for me, I quote Oscar Wilde: "Some people bring happiness wherever they go, and some people bring happiness whenever they go." fammmmmmammmmmmmmmmmaammmmmmmmmmmmmmommmm^m^ 2?Ambulance Fund Update Congregation Raises Funds for ARMDI?Additional Donations Needed Before June 15 Thank you to everyone who has donated to our TBS/ARMDI Am- Additional donations are needed, and may be sent to the Temple bulance Fund. Rabbi Felipe Goodman For the past couple of months we have witnessed some of the most virulent anti-Semitism the world has known since the end of the '40s. All of us who have been watching what happens around the world and especially in Europe keep asking a very old and not new at all question: What can we do as a peace- and freedom-loving people to stop the rheto-ric, the attacks and the hate? There are two ways of facing this problem. One way is to do what Israel does for every single one of us. To fight and defend ourselves to protect our freedom and our right to exist as a people by which-ever means necessary. The other way is by arming ourselves spiritually through educating our families and children as to the wonderful heritage and tradi-tions of our people. It is very easy to despair and throw our hands in the air when we feel that the whole world is against us; however, our own history has proven that a very simple and exemplary way to survive hate is through a strong Jewish Identity. An identity that will allow us to understand not who the people who hate are but who we are and what our traditions and heritage are all about. In times like this it becomes even more urgent and important to give our children a Jewish education. At times like this, each one of us has the obligation, both religious and moral, to make sure that all of the children in our midst remain steadfast in their faith and their beliefs. At times like this, through our support of Jewish education we can make sure that, beyond the anti-Semitism we are facing today, there will be a proud generation of Jews tomorrow. We are living in difficult times, but these are also very challenging hours. I have no doubt that we will physically survive this latest crisis that we are living through. At times like this it is our spirit that needs nourishment and attention. So, what do we do? Well, we pray together, we study together, and we grow spiritually strong together. Now is the Time to Claim Judaism Cantor Daniel Friedman Now is the time to claim Judaism. Now is the time to stand proud and say with a strong voice, "I am Jewish, I am here and I will not cower in the face of adversity. I will stand and support myself, my family, my community, my identity." I believe we are facing a grave challenge today, a challenge of continuity, and a challenge of identity amidst lies and misrepresentation?a challenge to the continuity of our lives and our lifestyle as free Jews, in a free world. Just recently a friend of mine told me a horrifying story of a seemingly banal anti- Semitic moment her 13-year-old daughter experi-enced at a very popular coffee store here in Las Ve-gas. Apparently the counter person was goading her into responding to his T-shirt that read "Like a little penance, I will not say dirty words. I will not say dirty words. I will not say dirty words." He continually asked her to say a dirty word to which his co-worker chimed in, "Just say, 'Jew'." My little 13-year-old friend lowered her head, paid for her drink and walked out of the store, stunned. My heart sank when I heard this story. I became angry and ran through the gamut of expected emo-tions, but, above all, I felt so helpless, so sad, so dis-appointed in humanity. I have the opportunity to work with our children, and I see the joy and smiles on their faces as they learn Torah and Haftarah, as they chant prayers and sing songs of Israel, of freedom, of the joys and sor-rows we have faced and overcome throughout our history as a nation of Israel. Now is the time for us to stand tall and proud as Jews, to hold our heads up high and come together with a loud voice and sing. We are at a crossroads, and it is up to us to pave the way to a new under-standing of ourselves in relation to the world around us. Now is the time to teach our children that we are proud of whom we are as Jews. Now is the time to come together and share with each other. Now is the time to raise our voices in song and prayer. It is through singing, praying and studying together that we learn about harmony, not just musical harmony, but physical and spiritual harmony. It is through all of this that we can become an ex-ample to the world around us. We can become an example of chesed- love, and tolerance. Mitzvah Mavens and Menschen?Thank you to the Women's League Mitzvah Mavens who prepared food for Erev Shavuot. Marilyn Dauber, assisted by Men's Club's Jerry Katz and Steven Cohen, served the food. The food was so good, the leftovers were snapped up by those who attended the Shavuot morning service on Friday. A Group of Friends? On May 5, the Chavurah groups met at the Holocaust Library and were greeted by Carole Helfand, who has been in charge of the library for many years. We were given a tour of the library/museum, followed by a presentation by Edythe Katz Yarchever, who discussed how the library was founded. Myra Berkovits then explained how the library is used for education in our school district, and we listened to Lida Lebovic and David Berkovits as they shared their personal stories of life after liberation. I want to thank Carol, Myra and David for helping me to put this program to-gether. We are determined to see membership in the Temple grow. There is an exciting future in the Membership Corner. Since January of this year we have been enjoying cocktail parties hosted by Temple members and will continue to do so over the next 10 months. We will include all Temple members and welcome future members. We are introducing a new program at these gatherings called the "Tribal Challenge." The ultimate goal of these parties is to build a stronger Jewish community amongst the Temple members, meet new people and make new friends. For those of you who already attended a party and are interested in being a part of the "Tribal Chal-lenge," keep an eye on your e-mail and look for up-dates in the Membership Corner. June 2002 6?Women's League/Men's Club The Women's League of Temple Beth Sholom Blanche Meisel For the Women's League, it is definitely "The Best of Times." This past year our membership rolls almost dou-bled, and the number of active participants nearly tripled. Many young women enthusiastically joined with us, add-ing sparkle and creative ideas to our many happenings. New this year was our Women's Seminar Day, held on April 21; the Secret Sister program, and the Z'hava group formed by our younger members. The Holiday Boutique drew a large portion of the Temple membership. The Paid-up Membership Brunch, the Torah Fund Luncheon and the Donor Thank You Luncheon all had top atten-dance. The Judaica Shop served the congregation well. Our bulletin, Vision, has been upgraded, as well as our service to the Preschool and the Religious School. Most importantly, we were able to donate $10,000 to Temple Beth Sholom. This is just a sampling of what we have accomplished this year. We pledge to accomplish more next year in terms of service and funding. May each of our members gather strength, one from the other, as we go forward. Men's Club Irwin Goldberg and Jerry Katz The Men's Club scored another success at its May meeting. There was great pizza?kosher, of course?beer and cards, in addition to a very excit-ing general meeting. Several outstanding events have recently been concluded, including a program in honor of Yom HaShoah. Dr. Jack Kane was our guest speaker at the March meeting. Dr. Kane, an ophthalmologist and attorney, gave an in depth and up-to-date report on the serious medical malpractice insurance prob-lem facing the people of Nevada. The Men's Club celebrated Yom HaAtzma'ut, Israel Independence Day, at our meeting on April 17. With almost 100 members and guests in attendance, a special D'var Torah dedicated to the holiday was presented. Mr. Alan Stock, KXNT radio talk show host, was our guest speaker whose presentation on Israel was both enlightening and heart wrenching. Over the past months, we've highlighted elements of our new organization that will move our Club into a new era. At the March meeting, the Men's Club elected Sam Showel as Financial Secretary, which is a new Board position approved by the member-ship. Sam will handle membership dues, maintain up-to-date mailing lists with the Federation of Jewish Men's Club to ensure receipt of information from the Western Region and National offices, and will rec-ommend financial investment opportunities for our surplus funds. Gary Banner is the chairman of our Community Relations Committee that coordinates our involvement in activities outside our synagogue. This month we spotlight another new committee, called "Synagogue Support," being chaired by David Carroll. David is the Men's Club go-to person for all events being held by other arms of our congrega-tion, including Women's League, Preschool and Re-ligious School, on all non-religious matters. This month, the Synagogue Support Committee received membership approval for a $2,175 donation to install safety devices on all the classroom doors. In addi-tion, the Men's Club will again sponsor the Religious School's annual student/teacher/parent picnic. We've been a little disappointed in the lack of con-gregational response to our Yom HaShoah Yellow Candle Program since this is one of our major an-nual fundraising projects. After mailing over 600 candles, we have only received donations from about 100 congregants. Please show your support of this worthwhile project if you have not yet done so. We have tentatively scheduled a representative from the "Volunteers for Israel" program for a pres-entation at our general meeting to be held on Wednesday, June 19. The entire congregation will be invited to attend this meeting. More information will be mailed out as plans are finalized. The Men's Club has three almost-new vending machines for sale. Each machine consists of a soft drink unit, a snack unit and a change maker, and is the perfect size for a small company or in an office. Contact Jerry Katz if you have an interest in pur-chasing one of these machines at an excellent price. We encourage you to try us out. Attend one or two meetings with no commitment or obligation. As we build our new organization, we will continue to include programs that men of all ages will want. June 2002 Religious School News?7 Ayelet Blit Takes Helm of TBS Religious School Temple Beth Sholom is pleased to announce that Ayelet Blit has become our Religious School and Family Edu-cation Director. Ayelet has an impres-sive and extensive background in edu- | cation. Her involvement in education began early on the kibbutz where she grew up. Needing to select a profes-sion, she chose education and was the lead teacher for the Pre-K class for two years, then as an assistant teacher and eventually teaching both Kindergarten and first-grade classes. Moving to the U.S. in 1991, Ayelet received a B.A. in dance education from New World School of the Arts and Florida International University, both in Miami, and from Queens College in New York City. She continued her stud-ies in a special professional program at the 92nd Street Y in NYC, receiving an M.A. equivalency degree for designing curriculum and academic programs and teaching through creative dance. In 1993, Ayelet became affiliated with Cen-tral Synagogue (one of the largest congregations in NYC) where she taught Hebrew and Judaica and designed and taught special programs for the High Holy Days to both the Religious and Pre-K schools. rnmmmmmmmmmmmmamm After relocating to Las Vegas in 1998, Ayelet began her own business, teaching curriculum through creative dance. This involved collaboration with school teachers, community centers and private educational programs throughout Las Vegas. In 1999, Temple Beth Sholom approached Ayelet to design a Jewish "Mommy & Me" and "Shabbat & Me" pro-gram for the Temple's children. That same year brought an-other successful collaboration with our Temple, this time de-veloping the Kindergarten Religious School program. In 2000, Ayelet joined the Temple as Assistant Director of Education. Since then, she has been involved in every as-pect of the Temple's Education Department?designing cur-riculum, choosing books, interviewing teachers, public rela-tions, problem solving and the many other day-to-day needs required in a large congregation. Her responsibilities also include running the Mommy & Me, Shabbat & Me, Friday Night Kids (Family Tot Shabbat) programs and the Conver-sion/ Introduction to Judaism program. Ayelet's busy life also includes her husband, Raz, and their children, Omri, who is four-and-a-half, and two-year-old Tomer. We are confident that Ayelet will continue to expand Tem-ple Beth Sholom's reputation of having the finest Jewish Religious School in Las Vegas. m Religious School Wrap-Up It was another wonderful year in the Judy and Ronald Mack School of Religious Studies. There has been tremen-dous growth over the last two years. We began with 85 stu-dents when we first dedicated the school. This school year, 156 students participated in our various programs. We ea-gerly anticipate the three new classrooms that will be ready for our students by fall to accommodate this growth. A major addition to our program this year was the T'filah B'shirah program (prayers and singing). We were extremely fortunate to have Avshalom Cohen, one of Israel's legen-dary lyricists and composers, join our Religious School fac-ulty. Mr. Cohen led the students in prayers and Israeli songs in a way we never experienced before. Another major change in our program was the division of the Hebrew and the Judaica programs. Our Hebrew classes met on Tuesday and Wednesday and were divided accord-ing to students' levels. It enabled the teachers to focus on a unified group, and allowed the students to enjoy a smooth progression throughout the year. On Sunday, we met for our Judaica program and the Young program (Pre-K, Kin-dergarten and first grade). Our Young program is rapidly growing. There are now two classes open to meet the needs of our four and five year olds. Over 20 students graduated our seventh grade and became Bat/Bar Mitzvah this year. In order to accommodate them and our current teenage students, our Post Bat/Bar Mitzvah program is ex-panding into a new program called "The Midrashah of Tem-ple Beth Sholom." This program will include Judaica, Ethics, Hebrew, elective classes and retreats. Our main goal in this program, which will be led by our professional staff and clergy, is to provide our ever-growing middle school and high school group of students with an ongoing, meaningful Jewish education. Our special activities throughout the year included the BBQ in the Sukkah, the Chanukah Treasure Hunt, Tu B'Sh-vat assembly and tree planting, Purim Mishloach Manot pro-gram and the Passover Seder. We look forward to celebrat-ing these and other events next year as well. We concluded our successful year with the End of the Year Assembly & BBQ. With tremendous pride we watched our students praying, singing and dancing. We listened to words from our Rabbi and Education Committee, and pre-sented our teachers with appreciation presents. At the end of the assembly, we all enjoyed kosher hamburgers, hot-dogs and other refreshments sponsored by the Men's Club. We would like to take this opportunity to extend a huge thank you to our extremely professional faculty, which car-ried out our programs with such amazing results, and to our Education Committee who worked so hard throughout the year. Because of your contributions our school is a great success. Registration for 2002-2003 school year starts Wednesday, June 5, at 8:30 a.m. -Ayelet Blit June 2002 8?Fashion Show Wrap-up Fashion Show Features Models from TBS Preschool, Religious School Ron & Judy Mack Religious School News?Did You Know?
