    JL^ His New York opening was an instant success * due principally* Danny claims* to the fact that his huge Chicago following had sent a delegation by special car there to see that he got a proper send-off. Later* Sidney Carroll was to write in ESQUIRE (Sept.* 19^7): "There are approximately 1*35LS672 nightclub comics* but Danny Thomas has one extra effect upon his audience* a wild one* They come; they see 5 they get hysterical5 then they pick themselves up and go out to shout the name of Danny Thomas from the roof tops*" When Danny left the first La Martinique engagement in 19*+*+* he was destined for great things* motion picture and radio-wise* But when Lastfogel* his agent* suggested a USO tour where the pay would be just enough to keep his wife and children (by.*.now there was Theresa) with food and shelter* Danny was too much of a dedicated man to hesitate long* He joined the Marlene Dietrich unit as a relatively unknown personality at the beginning* but one who was to leave an indelible stamp on laugh- hungry GITs. On his return from overseas* Danny found waiting for him a radio contract for the Fanny Brice "Baby Snooks" program* His characterization of the postman* "Jerry Dingle*" that year earned him the title of radio's most outstanding discovery of 19*+5o Other radio programs followed* first with Don Ameche and Frances Langford in their "Bickersons" series* and then his own CBS show which started January 2* 19h8. Meanwhile he was fulfilling dates at nightclubs which literally had "stood In line" until they could be visited. (more)
