Midbar Kodesh Temple welcomes Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn, his wife, Riki, and their daughter Meital Rina to their new home in Henderson and to Rabbi's first pulpit. At Midbar Kodesh Temple we have been blessed with talented people with vision and I have taken time over the past months to thank the many volunteers and outline their accomplishments. This month I wish to take the opportunity to thank our paid professionals who have helped to "get us to this season." The joint effort of volunteers and staff is what keeps the doors open. We have been fortunate to have a team that has pushed, prodded, and dragged us to higher levels and who have made demands on us, challenged us, to reach just a little bit further. Mira Slobody has served as our Hebrew School Administrator, overseeing a staff that includes teachers and aides, and designing curriculum for more than SO students. We crammed her into little cubby holes at Eastern, built her an entire addition at Cactus Garden, and designed state-of-the-art classrooms that are already filled on Paseo Verde. For six hours every week, teachers Lauralee Rothman, Maria Scher, Sheffy Eloul, Carmela Mandler, Miriam Karabel, Marcia Bard, and Janet Weinstein, and aides Steven Stone, Michael Stein, Miriad Mandler, Brad Simon, and Noah Muller have worked with Midbar students, readying them not only for pre-bar and bat mitzvah training, but to become productive Jews who will make a positive impact on their community. A quick count shows that we will have almost 100 students registered by next month and more are expected by September. Miss Lauralee knows that she will have at least a minyon of Kindergarten students beginning this year....many of these were her "babies" in the Mommy And Me class that she taught in our first year together. Our teachers are to be applauded and thanked, for the work that they do. They take pride in their students accomplishments and we take pride in them. At the May GALA we took the opportunity to thank Cantor Bob Fisher for the work that he has done with our students; in representing us in the community; for conducting holiday and Shabbat services; for keeping in contact with the membership, and for promoting Midbar Kodesh Temple every chance that he can. He has long served us as the middle man, taking the policies offered by the board and translating them into action. Cantor Bob looks forward to his partnership with Rabbi Wiederhorn. Together they will work as mentors for our congregation, helping us build on the desires of the congregation, offering interesting and innovative programming, while we continue to educate ourselves and our children and enrich our daily lives. While busy packing boxes and changing diapers, I often contemplate the move to Henderson and Midbar Kodesh with this teaching of Shammai in mind. I believe that following Shammai's words of wisdom will be the key to maintaining and developing a special atmosphere within the walls of our synagogue that will allow us to keep striving for greatness and holiness. "Make the study of Torah your primary occupation." As we begin this journey together, I look forward to the opportunity to learn together with you. The beauty of Talmud Torah, the study of Torah, is that we are always learning from each other. Regardless of our age or level of Judaic knowledge, each of us has something to offer. May we put the teachings and values of the Torah at the forefront of our thoughts and actions as we continue to grow as a community. "Say little, do much." Midbar Kodesh is a synagogue of action. The congregation has developed a reputation of not just talking, but doing. As a result, we have a beautiful new building, a growing Hebrew School, and a group of people that can accomplish anything they put their heart and mind to. There is much more work to be done, and I am honored to be joining the efforts with you. "Greet every person cheerfully." One thing that is immediately clear to those who steps foot inside Midbar Kodesh, is the warmth that radiates from each of our members. Every person is welcomed cheerfully and with open arms, making one's visit to shul an enjoyable experience. This is one of the many things that attracted me to Midbar Kodesh. May this sense of warmth, excitement, and joy, continue to be the trademark of our congregation. Riki, Meital, and I anxiously look forward to getting to know each and every one of you. Please come to the synagogue on Shabbat this summer or stop by during the week to say hello. We want to learn all of your names, so please introduce yourself again (and perhaps once more!) B'shalom Rav, Rabbi Jeremy Wiederhorn KOL BAM ID BAR PAGE 4 July/August 2000 EDUCATION Mira Slobody Education Director The Religious school had a wonderful and successful school year. The last Shabbat of the school year was exciting as we honored our 2nd grade students as they were consecrated. They were adorable and so proud. We also honored our teachers. Please be sure to send in your registration form ASAP, as classes are starting to fill up quickly and I am already formulating class rosters. If you have any questions about school, I may be contacted through the Temple office. Have a wonderful and safe summer. Meet New People Join One of The Midbar Kodesh Temple Chavurot! She came for 2 weeks and stayed almost a year. Maria Scher, who has served as our office administrator since November, was called in to do "emergency" duty "just to get us through the holidays" last September. She easily moved into the center seat taking us through the computer upgrade, the Rabbi search, the building project, the packing and THE MOVE, THE WALK, THE GALA, about a dozen B'nai Mitzvah and a couple of special events. In between we had almost 40 Shabbatot and lots of holi-days! Though we hoped that she would stay, her commitment was until August 2000. In April she made the decision to move on to other adventures, possibly returning to the school district, completing some classes, or working with youth. Maria, who was raised in Las Vegas and in synagogue life, has been an asset to Midbar Kodesh Temple in a time when we needed her the most. She understands the significance of being affiliated with a synagogue, of tefillah, of tzedakah, and more. I have taken personal pride in her accomplishments on behalf of the synagogue and take this opportunity to thank her for her commitment to my family, to Midbar Kodesh Temple, and to Judaism. Maria will stay with us to help make a smooth transition as her replacement and Rabbi Wiederhorn move into the building. Do not be surprised to see her at temple. She has promised to work on the high holiday committee, and get us "through the holidays" one more time. I know that you will join me in wishing Maria well as she begins her next journey. By the time you read this Rabbi Wiederhorn, Riki and Meital Rina will have arrived in Green Valley...hopefully with their furniture, and we will have celebrated our first Shabbatot together. More than 170 people participated in ser-vices on July 7 and 60 more on July 8, offering a warm Midbar welcome to our newest family. Membership is now on the rise and our professional staff has been preparing us for this very moment, and together, with Rabbi, Cantor, School Administrator, Teachers, Office Administrator, and volunteers, we will be ready to begin the next season. Michael Joshua Steinkohl became a Bar Mitzvah over Shabbat on June 2-3, 2000. On Friday evening, Michael participated in leading part of the services and chanted the Kiddush. His mother Sari blessed the Shabbat candles. On Shabbat morning he led the Torah and Musaf services, chanted the Haftorah, delivered a comprehensive interpretation of his Prophetic portion, and an original prayer. His Grandparents brought back his tallit from Israel, which was presented to him by his parents. The Steinkohl family first arrived in Las Vegas in December 1998. Michael is beginning eighth grade at Greenspun Junior High School. He is very talented in science and math. He loves hockey, skateboarding and plays all sports. Michael is the son of Dr. William and Sari Steinkohl. His brother Brian is an officer in our Midbar Kodesh USY group. Among the family and friends that joined Michael for his Bar Mitzvah were his Grandparents, Norman and Kathy Stumacher from Long Island, and Michael's uncle and aunt, Elliot and Sandi Stumacher, also from New York. Michael was thrilled to have his three cousins from New York attend as well as his best friend from Los Angeles, Jeremy Burke. Mazel Tov to Michael and his family for a wonderful simcha! _ Morris Sevy, son of Elias and Carly Sevy, brother of Suzy Sevy, will become a Bar Mitzvah on Shabbat morning August 12, 2000. Morris was born in Mexico City and attended Israelite Yiddish and Hebrew School where he was an excellent student. Now he attends Greenspun Junior High. Morris has achieved many goals in his life including being a very good Hebrew student, and in Mexico he was a great soccer player. He was a patrol leader in Maccabi. Morris has a good heart and enjoys helping people. He enjoys many outdoor activites including snowboarding, skateboarding, bicycling, soccer and swimming. Morris is a great son, great brother, and a great person. In the future, Morris aspires to be an ice hockey player and a plastic surgeon. Mazel Tov to Morris and his family! KOL BAM ID BAR TEMPLE MEMBERS GIVEN PRIORITY IN PURCHASING HIGH HOLY DAY TICKETS Those who remember our first High Holy days together will remember being packed into the small Eastern building with 200 of our newest best friends. Most of the board members stood in the lobby, so that others could be seated. We knew each other by sight if not by name and we squeezed in to make room for everyone who walked in the door. In the next years it was easier to identify each other as members and a wave of the tickets and a warm holiday greeting was enough to gain access since room was not an issue. Over the years a few non-members who have purchased tickets for the holidays have enjoyed our services and the warmth of our congregation and have become members. Some have dropped by services, without tickets, and we have always welcomed everyone and made room. Well we are finally in our new home and we can seat about 530 people. Our congregation is growing daily and we are determined to seat all of our members for the holidays. Our first priority will be to our members who will receive reservation forms in the weeks ahead. To be eligible for tickets, members must have their dues 3/4 paid or make special arrangements with the office by September 10. Please order your tickets early, so that we will know how many seats our membership requires. If there are extra seats available then the membership may purchase additional tickets for their out-of-town family members. If it seems that we will have extra room, then tickets will be made available for public purchase. Midbar Kodesh will continue it's philosophy of open seating...first come, first seated. In order to assure seating, it will be important that you arrive early, find parking in the neighborhood, the parks across the street or the lot, and walk in on time with your ticket. We are discouraging non-ticketed guests and need your cooperation in sharing this new policy with others, so there is no confusion at services. Ushering will be a difficult task this year since we have so many new members and so many new faces. Your kindness in helping us with seating our membership will be most appreciated. As always, we want tefillah to be the highlight of the service, not the mechanics of parking and seating. Watch your mail and respond early, so that we will know what our numbers look like! July/August 2000 Synagogue Dedications Still Available Taking building plans from a drawing board and interpreting them into a real building takes dreamers and visionaries and fundraisers. Midbar Kodesh Temple is beginning to look like the home that the building committee described to us during the early phases. Many of us can still remember the empty lot...4 1/2 acres of sand and stones. Not even a tumbleweed would call 1940 Paseo Verde home. Now over 200 members use the 1600 square foot building everyday. The beautifully landscaped grounds will have seating areas and will give us "people places" so that we can sit and visit as we would in our home gardens. We will share stories, conduct business and participate in outdoor services. The gazebo may serve as a chuppah or a podium. The patios will host dinners, refreshments, Sunday morning coffee. More than 100 families have committed to financial support of building campaign through 5 year pledges. Each year's pledge is due by year's end. There are many items left on the dedication list and there are donations in categories that will enable your family to be recognized on the Benefactor's Wall. Consider making a commitment to the Building Campaign. Contact Mark Goldstein at 383-8837 for more information on items still available for dedication. Or see Judie Lewis, Gail Alcalay, and Isabel Goldberg for ideas on how to become donors. PAGE 8 KOL BAM ID BAR PAGE 9 July/August 2000 WHAT DOES THE TEMPLE DO WITH THE ANNUAL DUES? VOLUNTEERS GET THE ONEG AND KIDDISH OUT ON THE TABLE Dues are only one source of operational income with which we pay our ongoing expenses for educational and programming materials, building operations, security, insurance, salaries and annual support of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Annual membership dues provide part of the operating base that helps Midbar Kodesh Temple make it possible to provide programs and services to all. Think of dues as a form of Tzedakah, not as a fee for service. There is a "Standard Dues" category and a "Sustaining Member" category. It has always been the practice to accept members at a rate commensurate with their ability to pay. A Dues Adjustment can be requested through Midbar's Dues Review Committee. ARE HIGH HOLY DAY TICKETS INCLUDED? Yes! Couples in any "Standard Dues" category will receive 2 adult tickets; Singles will receive 1 ticket. Members also receive a ticket for any children under 18 years old. Older children may be members in their own right and should fill out a membership form. ARE THERE OTHER CHARGES NOT INCLUDED IN ANNUAL DUES? Yes! Dues cover only 60% of the synagogue's annual operating budget. There are additional fees for Youth Programs, Religious School, Bar/Bat Mitzvah Training, Ma'ayan and Adult Education. There is a LID annual charge of $200.00 per family to pay for the City of Henderson's infrastructure tax. Any surplus will be used to pay for repairs and capital improvements, including equipment and furnishings. Building Fund and Kol Nidre Pledges are considered donations above dues, LID and registration fees. CAN FINANCIAL OBLIGATIONS BE PAID IN INSTALLMENTS? Yes! You will be billed monthly. Pay or charge the minimum or more monthly!! In order to help the synagogue stay within the monthly operating budget it is important that all dues be current each quarter: 1/4 paid by March; 1/2 paid by June; 3/4 paid by high holy days and fully paid by December. Hebrew School tuition must be current by the end of each semester. Minna Ogintz and Janet Stein have been heading up the Catering Committee almost since the first time Midbar Kodesh set the oneg and kiddish tables. They are aided by volunteer teams who trade off weeks by coming in on Friday mornings to set up, lay out the goodies on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings and clean up after the congregation has left. As the congregation continues to grow the demands on the Catering Committee also grow. If you can give any time to Midbar Kodesh Temple please contact the office immediately. Volunteer for the Catering Committee Today! t h e w F - i r e p s ' Tbe Writers' ? i r c l e was established to acknowledge special monetary donations given to the synagogue for a specific purpose. The donor h a s asfced that the gift itself be anonymous but Midbar kodesh would still lifce to t h a n * the d o n o r s for their generosity. With a party, of course! USY's End of the Year Pool Party took place on June 5th and was a huge success with 17 USYer's in attendance. The Simon Family's hospitality invited MKT USYer's into their home with open arms. The end of the year party marked the end of our programming until September. The new USY board got together to begin planing our upcoming year. We will kickoff our year September 10th with a rousing game of Kickball and other exciting games. We hope to see everyone there (more information will follow). Not only is it a great way to meet Jewish teenagers your age, but you will get your practice in for our Synagogue-Wide picnic. The year ahead is going to be great! For more information on USY, Kadima, or Katan please call Rina Roselinsky at 435-3263 Welcome New Members: Arnold and Shirley Paul Leslie Eisenstadt and Family Leo and Ethel Licht Warren and Denise Stamm Office Update by Maria Scher, Office Administrator Well, it's been a wild ride, but as many of you know, July will be my last month as office administrator. I thank all of you who welcomed me from the start and kept me laughing even when things got rough. Thank you to all the volunteers who have helped me in a variety of ways from assembling the bulletin to cleaning out the Rabbi's office. From this position I take away my experiences and my new friends, both of which I am grateful for. I have taken my position very seriously and have worked hard in the best interest of our congregants. Thank you for sharing your lives with me and allowing me to share mine with you. I am proud of the work we have accomplished together. This is also my opportunity to introduce Jacqui Stieglitz, our new office administrator. She comes to us with much experience, enthusiasm and excitement. I know she looks forward to getting to know all of you as I have. Be sure to say hello to her when you see her at services, or stop by the office and introduce yourself. I know that you will treat her with the same kindness and compassion with which you have treated me. B'Shalom. BIRTHDAY AND ANNIVERSARY SHABBAT WILL BE CELEBRATED AT MIDBAR KODESH TEMPLE AT 7:30 PM AUGUST 04 A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO THE SUNDAY MORNING MINYAN FOR HELPING TO TIDY UP THE SYNAGOGUE AND FINISH THE UNPACKING....YOU ARE THE BEST! SHEL SBARRA.... SAVE SEPTEMBER 10TH FOR 'CANDIDATES NIGHT' BEING HELD AT NER TAMID... KOL BAM ID BAR PAGE 11 July/August 2000 TISHA B'AV On Wednesday evening, August 9th, at 8:00 pm, we will join together in Jessica's garden, to read the Book of Lamentations (Eicha) by candlelight. We will provide the candles, but feel free to bring your own candles or flashlights. We will also have a special Tisha B'Av morning minyan on Thursday, August 10th at 7:30 am in the small chapel. Tisha B'Av, the ninth day of the Hebrew month of Av, is a day of national mourning in the Jewish calender. Like Yom Kippur, Tisha B'Av is a sundown to sundown fast day. The ninth of Av marks the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem in 586 BCE, the destruction of the 'Second Temple' by the Romans in the year 70 CE, as well as numerous other Jewish tragedies. It has thus become a time of commemorating the end of Jewish national sovereignty, which was resumed in 1948 when the State of Israel was declared. On Tisha B'Av, we recall the pain of exile, mourn the destruction of the Shoah, and acknowledge the resurgence of our people in the State of Israel fifty-two years ago. A combination of these themes is heard during the course of the evening and morning service, as we lament the many centuries of pain for our people. Friends from our Congregation Needed to Befriend UNLV Students The Home Away From Home Program, affiliated with the UNLV division of Student Services, needs families and friends to befriend out-of-town and international college students for the Fall semester. Participants see their students a few hours every month and answer questions students might have about Las Vegas, or our American culture. There is no financial obligation. If you would like to participate in this special friendship program, please call Sharlene Flushman, program coordinator, at 794-2888.
