Mr. f . R. Bracken lour le t t e r o f June 24th, f i l e f 23-5*5, rega Los Angeles, June 25th, 19 lng present water situation at Las Vegas, ju st received. ^ Am mailing copy o f i t to Hr. J effers, as requested. ----- Chairman Earley Harmon of the Nevada Commission advised me he would he here July 15th. I suggest you put that date on your calendar so as to try and he here, and we w i ll review the Las Vegas water situation with him. Am s a tis fie d that the heavy use o f water fo r cooling purposes, as the example you cite o f the Sewell Grocery, w ill appeal to h i* because o f Its gross unfairness to the company on the one hand, end the water shortage situation which it helps to create on the other. e ffo r t should he made at next le g is la tiv e session to have the present law repealed, eo that ws can place such consumers as the Sewell Grocery Company and others on meters* la more or less disturbing. I t seems to me that fact alone presents one o f the strongest arguments you can make with the c ity o ffic ia ls , newspaper men, e t c ., as a reason and necessity fo r conserving water. It Is to he regretted that the c ity o ffic ia ls did not see th e ir way clear to adopt a sprinkling ordinance, regulating the irrig a tio n of lawns, e t c ., to the early morning and late evening hours* This would afford some opportunity to build up the supply in the reservoir, which cannot he done now with the excessive drain upon it . in Las Vegas, and I am sure you are hound to get some re su lts. I f we are unable to reasonably regulate the consumption of water, then I t only means that the more there is av aila b le, the greater the consumption per capita w i l l he. We have submitted formal request to put down the new w ell but, of course, water from that source w ill not lik e ly be available u n til la te in the season. In the meantime, a* sending your le tte r, with a copy o f th is one, to Mr. Bennett, so that he ean have the benefit o f your suggestions about getting the present Heva&a law changed o r modified. In a le t t e r th is morning about another matter, S quite agree with your conclusions that every fhe decrease in production o f water at Las Vegas I suggest you keep hammering away on the matter 00 * Mr. S. g.
