CITY OF HOPE Public Relations Dept. 208 W. Eighth St. Los Angeles, Calif. 90014 (213) 626-4611 (Hank Brown) (Suggested Column Material) Donald A. Schollander, Olympic champion and one of the greatest competitive swimmers of all time, will be one of the athletes honored at the Sportsmen's. World Awards June 27, at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. The World Awards presentations banquet and honors ceremonies is sponsored by the Sportsmen's Club for the City of Hope National Medical Center. Recipients of the coveted "Victor" statuettes, symbolic of the Sportsmen's World Award, represent all-time greats in ten categories of sports, and were chosen by a National Selections Committee of leading sportswriters and sportscasters across the country. In 1963 at the age of 17* Schollander first attracted national attention when he won three National AAU swimming championships in the 200-'and 400-meters outdoors, and the 200-meters indoors. He repeated all of these victories the following year, added the 100-meter champion- ship, and went on to an unprecedented string of swimming victories when his aquatic talent fairly exploded at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. That summer in Tokyo, Schollander became the first swimmer ever to win four Olympic Games gold medals, in the 100-meter freestyle, 400-meter freestyle, 4xl00-meter relay, and 4x200-meter relay. All four triumphs set Olympic records, and in three of them, all but the 100-meter free- style, he set world marks as well! The amazing Schollander also counts three championships and one second-place in the Pan-American Games among his laurels, and won a first place in the 800-meter freestyle relay at the 1968 Olympic Games at Mexico City. At 6-feet tall, and 165 pounds, the handsome youngster is a standout as a swimmer and as a representative of his generation. As Don Schollander is dedicated to fair play and sportsmanship, in and out of the water, he has earned his designation to the lists of "Victor" Award winners. Schollander, who now makes his home with his family in Lake Oswego, Oregon, will be flown to Las Vegas for the Awards presentation by Trans World Airlines, official carrier for the event. The Sportsmen's World Awards presentations will be syndicated for national television by Hughes Television Network. The show will have the popular Art Linkletter as master of ceremonies assisted by more than a dozen celebrity award presenters and entertainers. Proceeds from the fourth annual Sportsmen's World Awards go to the free and nonsectarian City of Hope National Medical Center to aid in the programs of patient care, scientific research and medical education in the battle against catastrophic disease.
