We are sorry indeed that Mr. Graves thought we were inferring that somehow federal and local government funds don't come from taxes. We don't know of any business groups offering to underwrite government... except in the case of the Governor's hew residence. But we take pride in knowing when we are being sub' jected to a 'snow job'. In fact, the Governor's pronouncements remind us of this story: Once there was a restaurant that advertised 'rabbit-burgers'. In small print it was stated that the burgers were in truth 50% rabbit and 50% horse. But upon examination it was found that he meant one rabbit to one horse. A simple mistake. We find that an awful lot of the Governor's pronouncements have equal validity to us. We find them usually made up one rabbit to one horse! And for the sake of consistency alone, the Governor should have been opposed to ALL hidden taxes. Instead, he proposed...and got...hidden taxes on sales, liquor and cigarettes. How are these any different in principle from withholding taxes? Perhaps he is really in favor of a single tax... just one big tax at the end of the year. Then it could really hurt! Is it possible that the Governor and his cronies only spout piously when it suits their purposes? Their specious argument can be used against all kinds of credit plans. And we suggest that the next time Mr. Graves buys a house?╟÷he demand to pay the interest in one lump sum so that he will know it hurts. For some strange reason we get the feeling, that people who talk like this are all for pain...so long as it's the other guy's pain. And talking about pain,..we believe that our Governor should be scrupulous about the truth?╟÷even though it might give him pain and hurt his argument. Certainly it could take away some of the dramatics. We believe that he should have said that his proposed MediCal cuts might save the state some $70 millions NOT $210 MILLION, He could have gone on in the same truthful vein and said that it would save some $70 millions in federal monies and some $70 millions in local funds. But this wouldn't be entirely true either...because if California doesn't take advantage of the available federal matching funds,,.OTHER states would get it. Maybe he feels that the money should go to some other state. But since he is the Governor of California...we feel that he should be mainly concerned with this state! A little more truth and candor in his public statements might help to close the ^Credibility Gap' that is rapidly developing in Sacramento! But who knows...maybe some people like the ratio of one rabbit to one horse!
