National Family Volunteerism Day Committee Meeting Report November 5, 2005
The Committee met at the home of Soror Amanda McWilliams on Thursday November 3, 2005 in order to finalize all plans for the Health Fair and Thanksgiving Basket give away on November 19, 2005.
Thanksgiving Baskets will be distributed at the Doolittle Senior Center to 30 needy families on Saturday Nov. 19,2005 at 9:30 a.m. The Thanksgiving Basket Committee and all other interested Sorors will meet at the Senior Center at 7:30 on the morning of the 19th in order to assemble the baskets. We will have assistance from the AKAteens. This portion of our National Family Volunteerism Day will be combined with the Links, Inc., the Anthony Pollard Foundation, and the Coker Foundation distributing a total of 90 baskets. Jack and Jill of America will provide a continental breakfast snack to the seniors.
The Health Fair will begin immediately after the Thanksgiving Basket distribution. The scheduled time for that event is from 10:00am-1:00 pm. We will have information tables . set up by our very own NBLIC and SIDS committee. We will have a tables provided by Cooperative Extension (Healthy Hearts Program), the Social Security Administration covering Medicare Part D, Aid for Aids in Nevada, the Las Vegas FACT (Fighting Aids In Our Community Today), Miles for Smiles and many others. The Southern Nevada Black Nurses Association will provide free Blood Pressure checks. We are going to have books donated and have a reading room provided by the Sunrise Hospital Reading Program (HIPPY), and The Clinic on Wheels (COW) will provide free immunization to kids who need shots. If you know of a child who could use this service please ask them to make sure they bring there shot records to the event. We will have a Infant/Pediatric CPR class; however, it is only limited to the first /0 people who sign up. In addition, we will have an AKA Coat Day sponsored by the Black Family Committee, chaired by Soror Ina.
We will provide refreshments on that day. We will give away a door prize every half hour from 10:30-12:30. The door prize will be a $25 Wal-Mart gift card.
We are in need of help from Sorors. We need at least 24 Sorors to sign up to help at the event. We still need Sorors to donate $10 toward the purchase of food for the
. Thanksgiving Baskets if they have not already done so.
espectfully Submitted,

National Family Volunteerism Day
Committee Meeting Report
The Thanksgiving Basket Committee held a combined meeting with the SIDS committee
in order to combine our ideas for National Family Volunteerism Day. The meeting was
held on Sunday September 18, 2005 at the home of Soror Amanda McWilliams
National Family Volunteerism Day (NFVD) will be he at the Doolittle Community
Center on Saturday November 19, 2005 from 9:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Our goal this year
for NFVD is to completely carry out the ideas outline by our Supreme Basilius. This
year Theta Theta Omega (TTO) will distribute Thanksgiving Baskets as we have in the
past to 25 needy Senior Families. We are targeting seniors who are raising their
grandchildren. We will also have a Health Fair. We will be inviting the following
organizations to set up informational booths at the health fair: the NBLIC, Social
Security, Cooperative Extension, and our very own SIDS committee. We will teach a
Pediatric/ Infant CPR class to the first 20 people who sign up. We want to provide blood
pressure checks and flu shots. We will also provide car seat checks and host a coat drive.
It is our goal to provide refreshments and a host of activities for families in the West Las
Vegas community. If we are successful in having books donated for NFVD we will also
include Soror Jacquelyn Caffey’s committee in on this endeavor by having a reading
room for the children and giving away books to those at the Wendell Williams E.S. who
are current participants in our reading program.
Other ideals for entertainment are to have a raffle giving away items such as: Wal-Mart
gift cards, movie tickets, gas cards, McDonald gift certificates, Meadows Mall gift
certificates and gift baskets. We would like to provide a jumping machine for the kids
and face painting.
We are currently in the process of contacting local grocery stores in an attempt to have
our Turkey’s donated. We will need donations from Sorors in order to cover the side
food items which will include: green beans, macaroni and cheese, com, butter, eggs,
dressing, cranberry sauce, cake mix and cake frosting. So, we are asking Sorors to
donate $10 each so that we can cover the cost of these food items.
We would like to invite local politicians and ask for media coverage.
In order to secure the rooms needed at Doolittle we need a $300 donation from the
Sorority.
