It will focus on modem, jazz and ballet, and will feature outstanding artists like Kelly Michaels, Lance Alexander, Gus Giordano and Daniel Nagrin,?╟Ñ said Lonny Gordon, chairman of the UNLV dance arts department. ?╟úEven with cutbacks, the dance arts department is moving forward,?╟Ñ he continued. ?╟úWe have finally completed the new 4,500-square-foot studio with the L?╟╓Air pneumatic state-of-the-art sprung floor. It is the most advanced dance floor that has been built. We plan to install two more L?╟╓Air floors by 1993-94.?╟Ñ The dance department season begins Oct. 10, with a concert following ?╟úNevada Women in Politics,?╟Ñ in the Richard Tam Alumni Center. Kelly Michaels, artist-in-resi-dence, will perform a faculty concert with the assistance of guest artist Lane Alexander Oct. 30 to Nov.l. GORDONDANCE, a studio concert with Michaels, teacher Victoria Dale, choreographers Venetia Stifler and Louis Ka-vouras and advanced dance stu- dents, will be presented Nov. 19-21. Student Choreographers?╟╓ Showcase, with Michaels, will present faculty-directed work Dec. 4-6. Artist-in-residence Rudy Perez and Ensemble will perform a studio concert March 18-20. Perez, the Dance Theatre Inc., with Jeffrey Grimaldo, Anne Goodhian and Dura Snodgrass, will perform in a faculty concert April 2-4. GORDONDANCE will present a studio concert April 15-17, with the premiere of new music by composer Beth Mehocic. The final concert of the season Will bring the best of student cho- reography in concert, ?╟úStudent Choreographers?╟╓ Showcase,?╟Ñ with artist-in- residence Gus Solomons Jr., April 30 to May 2. The dance department is offering 20 classes this fall, instead of 26 as originally planned, because of budget constraints. About 1,200 students took dance classes this , past spring, an increase of 270 students in the one year Gordon has headed the department. ?╟úWe are professionally oriented to teach students to be professional rather than, for example, a therapy oriented dance department. Our graduates will be prepared to dance in professional companies throughout the world as well as on the Strip in Las Vegas,?╟Ñ Gordon founded a Council of Dance Arts Advisors to work with the dance faculty to improve UNLV?╟╓s program. Local members include Adele De Angelo, Hal DeBecker, Garold Gardner, Barbara Hall, Patricia Harris, Fluff LeCoque, Terry Lo Verne, Margaret Rampey, Susan Knoll Smith, Wayne Tanaka, Angie Wallin, Jodi Warman, Donna Washington and Katherine Woody.
