SCOTT Newley to Make Vegas Bow Aug. 7; Y Three years ago, Anthony Newley, a man of many talents, was the first star signed by Caesars Palace to a ; million dollar contract for appearances over a four-year \ period.- His Las Vegas debut, held in abeyance because of other commitments, will finally take place Aug. 7 when the actor-composer- : writer - director-recording artist begins a three-week engagement. Newley joins such en- i tertainment giants as i Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Tony Bennett and Petula Clark on the Caesars Palace roster. His program, now being arranged, probably will include numbers from "Stop the World, I Want to Get Off," which Newley directed, co-wrote with Leslie Bricusse, and Antunn?╟?wfl,uu starred in; "The Roar of Anthony Newley the Greasepaint( the Smell of the Crowd," which he and Bricusse put together; and songs from the current film, "Can Heironymous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?" which he produced, directed, wrote the music for and starred in. S Newley made his film debut in England at an early <age, and also became involved in stage theater early in ;his career. In TV he first commanded attention in -"Sammy," followed by his singing debut in "Sunday Night at the London Palladium" and his own specials. Newley first hit the record charts in Great Britain with "Why?", "Do You Mind?" and "Pop Goes the \ Weasel." He also has recorded four albums, the latest of which contains songs from "Heironymous Merkin." 'Soul Day' Celebration Thursday Caesars Palace celebrates "Soul Day" when \ "Aretha Franklin makes her Las Vegas debut in Circus I Maximus theater-restaurant. M Danny Thomas is the first big-name star signed for Howard Hughes' Landmark, which probably will open . on July 1. Danny opened the Sands Hotel in 1952 and, .according to a spokesman, was personally requested by Hughes to do the same for the Landmark. M-63,168 S-79,803 Howard Hughes Desert inn To Break Nudity Barrier By DOROTHY MANNERS HOLLYWOOD - Another blow to what "family trade" there is in Las Vegas. The Desert Inn will have a nude show for the first time in 19 years! This marks quite a departure for the first hotel bought by Howard Hughes in Vegas. And ironically, as the new revue takes off its clothes, the budget goes up over $1,000,000 to stage it. In charge of getting the bare - flesh extravaganza underway is Ttop -Arden who has put on all Desert Inn shows since 1950 and at the same time does the Stardust and the Paris Lido. Says Arden, "I'm no novice to nudity, the Lido was one of the first in Vegas. But believe me, it's something new at the Desert Inn where for years our headliners have been such folksy-folks as Jimmy Durante, Rosemary Clooney, Bob Newhart and Andy Williams ?╟÷ all fully clothed." The International Set continues to get a social workout on bom sides of the Atlantic. In Paris, the showing of Beverly Hills artist Gant Gaither's charming paintings at Galrie Andre Weil, had 'em flying in from all directions. Rex Harrison came up solo from Cannes; Lee Remick, Fleur Cowles-Meyer and Cecil Beaton flew the Channel from London. From Spain came the Nicholas Biddies and Countess Tolstoy. The Alfred Bloom- ingdales and Virginia Zanuck arrived from Los Angeles. Others who just came to exclaim over Gant's oils were Bobo Rockefeller, Mrs. Marshall Field and Mir Khan, Prince of Pakistan.
