Won 16 athletic letters in high school, including state discus championship.^-/' Attended Washington State Univeriiiy, Pullman} mechanical engineering, semesters 1997-1936 and 1939 and 1940, 1940 Joined the Austin Company (construction), Seattle -?╟≤ common laborer. Through surveying skills, became assistant chief engineer at age 20 on 55-acre Boeing Aircraft construction project. 1941-1942 Assistant superintendent of ground operations for Boeing. 1942-1943 Entered United States Marine Corps as an air wing engineering officer. Became engineering officer in operation of Marine Air Transport Service, a 26,000-mile air route through the Pacific war tones. Awarded Bronze Star. 1943-1946 Assigned to Navy Department, Bureau of Aeronautics, Washington, D. C., for development work on turbojet and ramjet engines. 1946-1960 Joined McCulloch Corporation, Los Angeles, as assistant pur- chasing agent, becoming purchasing agent the same year. McCulloch is world-wide manufacturer of powered chain saws and industrial engines. In 1991, became vice president and chairman of their recently acquired Scott-Atwater Outboard Motor Division. Extensive outboard engine research, including Colorado River and Catalina Island championship racing. 1946-1960 Extensive world travels, estimated air distances 12 times around the world, establishing McCulloch's foreign manufacturing and sales distribution. 12/16/60 Elected president and chief executive officer of Studebaker-Packard Corporation. Assumed these duties February 1, 1961. (more)
