Page $0--BSMmmxmt *&*?╜ Wed., Dec. 25,1968 'Holiday on Ice'?╟÷Breath-Taking Show "Holiday on Ice" will come flashing into the Oakland Coliseum tonight with visual delights that will fake your breath away. , I know this to be the case, because I saw the show two weeks ago in Reno where the troupe performed in that city's handsome new Coliseum complex. ''Holiday on Ice" has a distinctive style geared more to adult tastes than the other ice shows. This is not to say that the children won't be thoroughly entertained since movement, color, comedy and beguiling animals are everywhere to be seen. GORGEOUS COSTUMES But the comedy is subtle, without the pratfalls that sometimes are more terrifying than amusing to the youngsters. This' show em- p h as i z e s gorgeous costumes and decor which this year are more opulent than ever before. Ronnie Robertson, the show's star, is back, his fantastic technique as unbelievable as ever as he twirls, leaps and spins himself into a blur that dazzles the eye, particularly in an enchanting tribute to Fred Astaire in which Robertson plays Mr. Top Hat himself with debonair authority. The show's highlight is a movie pageant which begins .with the Mack Sennett The "Holiday on Ice" corps de ballet in a pageant of color, Bathing Beauties and the Keystone Kops. goes on through the era of Rudolph Valentino and the Perils of Pauline to end in the period of the early talkies and the musicals of the 30's. FEMALE STARS The number is staged with spirit and wit and features two of the troupe's finest female stars ?╟÷ Alice Quessy as Pearl White and Anna Galmarini as Judy Garland. Both of the ladies perform with superb agility and bring a commendable theatricality to their skating. The show's most hilar ious moments are provided by "The Banana Brigade," a team of chimpanzees || who skate, play hockey and even ride bicycles like old troupers. VOODOO RITUAL The opulent production numbers are outstanding, particularly an enchanting visit to Granada and a stunning jungle voodoo ritual. Noted Broadway designer Freddy Wittop ("Hello, Dolly!") has outdone himself with exquisite costumes that had the ladies gasping. ?╟÷Jeanne Miller
