Las Vegas, Nev. Sun (Cir. D. 25,983 - S. 25,694] Men's P.C.B. Est. 1888 Pzazz '70 Ana All Th Io Be Better nan \H By RALPH PEARL Rehearsals in Las Vegas are as rare as a sunny day in July. Somewhere on the Strip or downtown a group of guys and gals, dressed like they're going on a picnic to Lake Mead, are being put through their paces. But many times as we've sat through a lazy afternoon watching the kids making with the high kicks or struggling through intricate dance numbers, there has never been a show in rehearsal like the kind Don Arden stages. We sit here in the Desert Inn showroom watching Donn Arden and his staff putting almost hundred guys and gals through their paces for the brand new "Pzazz 70" show, which will debut here at the DI July 10th for at-least six months and maybe longer. Producer Frank Sennes will tdadly tell you while clutch ing at his heart with the tears streaming down his chubby cheeks, that Donn Arden produc tions aren't staged for petty cash. Said Frank, "You can almost buy a small Strip hotel for the kind" of dough Arden spends on one of his shows." This "Pzazz 70" will cost a wee bit more than a million dollars, And though "Pzazz 70" will look like one happy, carefree afternoon on the town when you see it, there is much sweat, tears and 3 little blood letting in evidence throughout these strenu ous afternoons that defy the clock and all forms of gravity, There's no .such thing as breezing through any of the numbers in this show. And Donn Arden, known for his driving, meticulous methods, has often been known as the "Captain Bligh of show business." He has been known to put a whole company through a harmless time step for hours if it didn't look good. On this particular afternoon, alter driving a dozen or more dancers through a number which will be one of the more colorful in the upcoming "Pzazz 70," Donn had some-of the kids prac tically dead on their feet with their tongues hanging down to their knees. Now Arden called for a brief coffee break and one of the kids staggered over^trrp where we were sitting and fell in a sweaty, crumbling hulk of quivering humanity. And when she had rested enough to get back her speech she cursed out Arden in the kind of language you expected from a blackjack loser or a guy who'd just won an all expense paid trip to Boulder City. It took us by surprise because the lady is one of the better dancei cafe business. Bewildered, we said, "Gee, if he's that bad, why not work in one of the other shows on the Strip. Surely you'd have no trou- ble at all in catching one." The lady looked at me like I'd. just fiipped my hairpiece. "Youj crazy or something? Donn Arden iij the only guy to work for in tils business. He has no equal." So go understand lady dancers. The coffee break was over and the call came for all to get back onstage. Arden began hurling orders and suggestions and the lady dancer who'd complained so bitterly a couple of minutes before began sweating, and bleeding (inward- is she huffed and puffed and glided all over the stage' with the others, she managed to sneak a look of uncon- ceale I pleasure in our direction throuih all Die sweat and pain.
