Kipling wrote, and most football fans of a generation ago will give you the nod when you talk of today's gridiron stars. They may also give you a bit of a faraway look in their eyes, for those who were lucky enough to see him in action, before TV, remember the grace and consummate skill of "Slingin1 Sammy" Baugh, two time all-American quarterback at Texas Christian University and standout pro back with the Washington Redskins. That's why Baugh will be one of the eleven all-time great champions to be honored at the Third Annual Sportsmen's World Award Presentations on June 28, at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas. The great Slingin' Sammy will join other Hall of Famers who were chosen for receipt of the coveted 'Victor' statuette by vote of a National Selections Committee composed, of leading sports- writers and. sportscasters across the country. In a pro career of 16 years with the Redskins, Baugh was named to the NFL All-Star Team six times. He played on two Redskin NFL championship teams, and five Washington divisional champs. He personally remains the Number One forward passer in the NFL. The amazing Baugh, who completed 1,709 of the 3*016 forward passes attempted, in his career, for a .567 average, threw for 187 touchdowns. In 1945* Baugh completed 128 out of 182 attempts, for a fantastic .700 completion average} His tosses were good for almost 1,700 yards that year, in which he threw for eleven TD's. As a man who could do it all on a football field, Baugh also was a deadly punter. He averaged 51.if yards a kick in 1942, and i Philadelphia in 1939* Baugh boomed 14 punts off his toe in one game. For all of these exploits and. for his college achievements, including leading TCU to both Sugar Bowl and Cotton Bowl titles in 1936 and 1937* respectively, Baugh was elected, to the Helms Hall College and.
