N HALLELUJAH HOLLYWOOD!?╟Ñ ?╟≤I: How to spend four-atid-a-half million dollars in 3years. By DAVID GALLIGAN So many of us spent our lost youth haunting the local movie theatre, racing up and down grotesquely carpeted aisles for an extra box of sugar babies. We were weaned on a lovesick Garland and Rooney. ( .Girl Crazy ) or the low-dips of Astaire and Rogers (?╟úThe Barclays of Broadway ): For me it was always MGM and their musicals ?╟÷ somehow they seemed to flesh out my childhood fantasies ?╟÷ with their polished floor*;, feathered boas, and staircases forever . frosted in tulle, reaching upwards to the heavens. That was the dream. It was Lana Turner tripping down the stairs m ?╟úZiegfeld Girl?╟Ñ or Garland moOning over Tom Drake the boy - next - door in ?╟úMeet Me In St. Louis.?╟Ñ It was Leslie . Caron, Esther Williams, Red Skelton, Clark Gable ?╟÷- and a ^ rostet of stars that went on and on. They came and went with thfeinglecline and fall of Hollywood ?╟÷ the floors > cioude<#ie boas dropped. They said the MGM musical wa^dpa&\Astaire was too old,Garland Died, Lana went oil tp ^Ross- Hhnter. The studio cancelled its contract^^soM its memorabilia. A ?╟úFor Sale?╟Ñ sign went up on theJpa.Cldot. | The greedy studio eye looked to Las Vegas for j reinvestment. They erected a mediocre monument and called it the MGM Grand Hotel. It was nice, it w^ pretty, but- it wasn?╟╓t like ?╟úin the movies/?╟╓ 11 cost them a stuqfd-^ana me.a dteapi- Or so I thought. Then I'saw DorJArden^ ?╟úHallelujahfaollywood!I ?╟÷ the live spectacular to end all spectaculars ?╟÷ the Grand Hotel?╟╓s tribute to the Hollywood-musical. The sensation it gives is like being caught m ..a prism -r its beauty is blindihg: It opens in mpfors and silvers andleds and whirling curtains filled with images Of Iquis B. dV&yer?╟╓s famous menu of stars. Then M famous Togo of Leo the Lion, surrounded by *' done up in manes of feathers**.. lion-roared his ItpprOval. Oh, yes, he was the real thing. Ne!xi was their salute to ?╟úJumbo,?╟Ñ complete with a flying Bozo, The Glowoxlangling from the ceiling. Tanya, The Elephant pranced about and made her bid for stardom in this portion ofTthe show. She?╟╓s talented, this girl, if one carnally say that* about ?╟úan elephant ?╟÷ even if she does have a slightly maid caste to her eyes. Apt* TV Belongs to Alan Weeks and Winston DeWitt Hemsley (Jrrilliant talents), who somehow don?╟╓t make it v?Θ╝rk Tor Thfem. I think ?╟╓they?╟╓v^been dwarf <$l>y the production.^ v'_ ?╟úKis^rhet?╟Ñ glides on with llamas and camels, taking over alt?╟╓ fiv?· of/the Ziegfeld'Room?╟╓s stages ^ with oijfr entire cMffohjjr aped harem room descending from fl^^ping/. 'A^TvirPa giant screen and a pudgy Judy Garland . singing?╟úYou Made^eXove/^ou to Mr. Gable. In an instant the stage is a turn - of - the - century St. Louis fair -jgtts lacy ferris wheel ablaze with lights ||| its incrediblecptumes turning into petalled flowers as it twirls its w^mo Easter Sunday. 9**^ The show moves on at a breakdeck pace. It switches to ?╟úThe Pirate?╟Ñ (and its naked natives) in a burst of the glory that once was. As the ship and its crew sink to their fate, an immense tank is lowered, complete with a dolphin, who flirts charmingly with a scantily clad sea nymph. And there's much more ?╟÷ Siegfeld and Roy, amazing illusionists, who are able to make a tiger disappear before your own eyes. ?╟úHallelujah Hollywood?╟╓s?╟Ñ, finale out - Bysbys the famous Mr. Berkeley?╟╓s; famous musicals. The Grand Staircase thrusts itself forward as the stage fairly drips in the. most /elegant parade of costumes, stunningly^ realized by Ray Aghayart and Bob Mackie, since Flo Ziegfeld took wing. 'Pieces then are flown i?½ from the. -ceiling, forming a celestial chandelier, as a , cast of seemingly thousands surrounds the audience (be sure to sit half-way -?√ß back), and a lonely spotlight climbs theses (in the show?╟╓s, only tasteless bit) in search of an unseerfjudy Garland. ?╟úHallelujah Hollywood!?╟Ñ, then, is the dream come true. No adjectives could do it full justic^/It?╟╓s what' the circus never was, and should have be$n, when we were kids. It s.a Barnum and Baily shpw, for adults. As beautiful and make believe as. it can be.
