Senate Meeting 18-30 Page 8 09/22/88 VIII. Senator Kroth announced that she felt the article in the Yellin' Rebel was exaggerated. Senator Charoenbanpachon felt that sometimes the press manipulates the issues. She agreed with the appointed Senate President Pro Tempore Wayne Phillips that all questions are good ones; discussion is very crucial. CSUN Vice President Jennifer McGinty mentioned that it is the Yellin' Rebel's right to write about what they want. They are a learning lab as is CSUN. She commented that senators should come to the Organizations Board Meetings to find out the details regarding funding for organizations. At last week's meeting she felt that since none of the senators even mentioned that they couldnrt make the Organizations Board Meeting that week, that there wasn't a need to explain what went on, since no one expressed an interested before the meeting. She also mentioned that the process for interviewing the Food and Beverage Manager was a through process. Senator Walker mentioned that he like the article which the the Yellin' Rebel wrote. He also mentioned that he was running for Homecoming King. Senator Dreibelbis mentioned that if you are upset about something that is published in the newspaper, you should write something yourself they will publish it; CSUN President Steve Evenson announced that next Thursday would be the deadline for the representatives to find out about the committees in their college that are faculty committees. CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer read a memo regarding the posting of agendas and minutes being posted 72 hours before a meeting. Senator Kurzer was nominated best type-setting awardisfcg for flyers. He mentioned that he was working with Rob Rosenthal in a can recycling effort that would go toward a scholarship for students. He mentioned that soon there will probably be a senate resolution to no longer have the use of foam cups on campus, for a better environment. CSUN President Steve Evenson announced that he would need the senator's input on the increase for non-resident tutition. Adj ournment CSUN Senate President Jack E. Spicer Jr. adjourned the Senate Meeting at 5:25pm. Respectfully Submitted/ Prepared by: n Senate Meeting 18-30 Page 7 09/22/88 CSUN President Steve Evenson announced that the Food and Beverage position in CSUN will probably be eliminated. This will probably be the last year for that position. Senator Kurzer announced that he didn't like the story which was printed in the Yellin' Rebel. He also mentioned that he felt that asking questions in meetings was good to do. Senator DaQuino announced that when he sent the bill back to the Bylaws Committee, which the CSUN President Steve Evenson wrote, he did it because the same thing had happened to him. He said, "turn about is fair play." He announced that he was upset about Senator Walker not showing up at a meeting that was planned for all senators. He announced that there is a need for a Publications Board Chair. He.questioned why there was a denial for the applications of Food and Beverage Manager. If anyone is interested doing a traffic count job, they are paying $12 an hour. All interested people should see him. Senator Hoffman mentioned that she was the one to ask for the applications for Food and Beverage Manager. She mentioned that she felt that if they were going to hire someone they should know something about that person and their experience. Senator Geihs felt that after hearing Joe DeMarco speak in front of the Senate, the application for employment was not relevent. Senator Young announced that there is a need for volunteers to work the shuttle bus that goes out to the stadium for football games. Senator Dreibelbis mentioned that he agreed with appointed Senate President Pro Tempore that questions should be asked on issues. This gives the senators a chance to ask questions which they feel are important. He commented that CSUN Vice President Jennifer McGinty's nails look fabulous. Senator Robertson announced that if the shuttle buses to the football games have group discounts, he may get his fraternity to go. He also passed out a sheet for senators to sign up to be on the bylaws committee. Senator Cozine announced that she would not be able to make the Curriculum Committee meeting tomorrow, and was in need of a proxi. Senator Vigano offered to be her proxi. Senator Polovina mentioned that she was overwhelmed by the article in the Yellin' Rebel. She mentioned that maybe CSUN President Steve Evenson should maybe write an editorial in the newspaper. Senate Meeting 18-30 Page 6 09/22/88 Lillian Franky, Entertainment and Programming Director addressed the Senate. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried, with fifteen in favor, two opposed (DaQuino, Varela), and three abstentions (Robertson, Walker, Dreibelbis). Motion by CSUN President Steve Evenson to move out of the order of the day and into open discussion. There were no objections. VII. Open Discussion Lonnie Hammergren, candiate for the UNLV Board of Regents addressed the Senate. VI. New Business G. Approval of cash prizes for Homecoming on October 14, 1988 for sign competition and other; $125 for first place, $75 for seconded place, $35 for third place, $115 for other, to come out of the 903 account. Motion by CSUN Vice President Jennifer McGinty. Seconded by Senator Dreibelbis. Lillian Franky, Entertainment and Programming Director addressed the Senate. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried, unanimously. VII. Open Discussion Appointed Senate President Pro Tempore Wayne Phillips mentioned that he felt that asking questions, whether they seem stupid or not should be allowed to be asked. CSUN President Steve Evenson announced that on October 5th and 6th there will be a Board of Regents Meeting in MSU room 201. He mentioned that if the budget should fall short, each of the departments in CSUN will have a proportion taken from them. The NSA and OPI accounts will not be effected if a short in the budget takes place. Senate Meeting 18-30 Page 5 09/22/88 C. Approval of UNLV Dixie Band for $150. Motion by Senator Reiss, to approve. Seconded by Senator Hoffman. There was discussion. Lillian Franky addressed the Senate. Call for a vote. Motion carried, unanimously. D. Introduction/Approval of Joe DeMarco for Food and Beverage Manager. Motion by Senator Walker to waive the bylaw and approve Joe DeMarco as the Food and Beverage Manager. Seconded by Senator Reiss. Joe Demarco addressed the Senate. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried, with sixteen in favor, two opposed, and one abstention. Senator Chris Robertson arrived at the Senate Meeting. E. Approval of $400 for University Tennis Club. Motion to approve by CSUN Vice President Jennifer McGinty. Seconded by Senator Kurzer. Miguel Palmieri, Appropriations Board Chair addressed the senate. Call for a vote. Motion carried, unanimously. F. Approval of one additional room night for Mort Berkowitz for Homecoming October 14, 1988, performance. Motion to approve by Senator Kurzer. Seconded by Senator Vigano. Seconded by CSUN Vice President Jennifer McGinty. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried, unanimously. VI. New Business A. Approval of Executive Board Nominations. Motion to approve by Senator DaQuino items A - F with the exception of item E. A. Approval of Mario Menez as a member to the Bylaws Committee. B. Approval of Mario Menez as a member to NSA. C. Approval of Mario Menez as a member to OPI. D. Approval of Margaret Vigano as a member to the Elections Board. F. Approval of Dan Bunin as a justice to the Judicial Council. Seconded by Senator Dreibelbis. Call for a vote. Motion carried, unanimously. B. Approval of cash prizes for Blood Drive; First place $75, Second place $50, Third Place $25; to come out 902 account. Motion to approve by CSUN Vice President Jennifer McGinty. Seconded by Cozine. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried, eighteen in favor, no opposed, and one abstention (Charoenbanpachon). Senate Meeting 18-30 Page 3 09/22/88 Minutes Jan Nicosia, Video Yearbook Editor, announced that she has had people at the events on campus filming. The Video Yearbook will be sold in the Bookstore. The Video Yearbook will be sold for $20.00. The Bookstore will get a $2.00 commission off of it, and the Video Yearbook will receive the $18.00. Dick Hubbel, Office of Public Information Director announce that Quicksilver was in need of articles for the magazine. CSUN Vice President Jennifer McGinty announced that there will be a blood drive on the 29th. Senator Brandi Hoffman, announced that at the Admissions Committee will be meeting on Fridays, but the dates are not set up yet. Rob Rosenthal, Director of KUNV, announced that Dick Hubbel, the Office of Public Informations director did the CSUN spot on the radio. /.KUNV has a children's program on the morning show; there is good response. The gigs at the Stake Out and Botany's are doing well. Victoria Von Tobel, Nevada Student Affairs Director announced that Dan Quayle visited UNLV. There was about 300 students in attendance. On October 18 and 19, there will be a Meet the Candidate Day. The Voter Registration Drive will be continue on Wednesday and Thursday. CSUN President Steve Evenson announced that Victoria Von Tobel is doing an outstanding job. She has only been in office for a short time and has done a lot in that amount of time. VI. Executive Board Nominations A. Approval of Mario Menez as a member to Bylaws Committee. B. Approval of Mario Menez as a member to NSA. C. Approval of Mario Menez as a member to OPI. D. Approval of Margaret Vigano as a member to the Elections Board. E. Approval of Mike Weroswalski as a member to the Elections Board. - Out of Order. F. Approval of Dan Bunin as a justice to the Judicial Council. Senate Meeting 18-30 Page 2 09/22/88 Minutes Page 8; in open discussion, Senator Vigano announced that it should read: Senator Vigano announced that she was not not informed enough concerning the Organziations Board Meeting. She mentioned that someone would have been at the meeting since she represents the Hotel Association. Call for a vote. Motion carried with corrections added to the Senate Minutes; motion carried, unanimously. IV. Announcements CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer announced that if there is a problem in that this Senate Meeting is considered not valid, because of posting of the agenda, the Senate can approve the items that they approve in today's meeting as a whole at the next Senate Meeting. CSUN President Steve Evenson announced that at the Course Fe®- Committee which he attended announced that there may be a fee for taking Photography classes of about $15.00. The Eductaion College may have a fee for CIE 434 classes of about $25. The Business and Economics Classes for Eco 434 may have a fee of $25. He asked the Senate for (•put regarding these classes and if the fees that would be added are necessary. There will be a Curriculum Meeting in FDH 508 tomorrow at 3:00pm. Senator Clay and Senator Cozine how serve on this committee should attend. If anyone is on a Faculty Senate Committee^ they should contact the committee chair for meeting dates and times. He also passed a sheet around in which one senator for each college will find out what additional Faculty Committee Meetings there are, so that the senate can represent the students. V. Board and Committee Reports Lillian Franky, Entertainment and Programming Director thanked everyone who helped out with the Family Fare. Tomorrow there will be a PEP Rally in the Courtyard. The Entertainment and Programming Board is working on Homecoming and Oktoberfest, Miguel Palmieri, Appropriations Board Chair announced October 1st, Budget Account Reports will be distributed. These reports will come out twice a month. He expressed disappointment in the Yellin' Rebel Article, this past week. Barbara McFarland, CSUN Business Manager, announced that there are outstanding receipts from travel claims.
