JEWISH FEDERATION OF LAS VEGAS April 2, 1990 Contact: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Marla Gerecht, 732-0556 ISRAEL INDEPENDENCE DAY UNITES COMMUNITY IN SUPPORT OF ISRAEL A day of festivities for the entire family to enjoy has been planned by the Council of Jewish Organizations (COJO) of the Jewish Federation of Las Vegas in recognition of the fact that Israel has completed another year of nationhood as the modern Jewish homeland. This community-wide celebration of Israel's 43rd birthday will be held Sunday, Apr. 21, in the Main Ballroom of the Sands Hotel from 12-4 p.m., with opening ceremonies at 1 p.m. Israel Independence Day actually falls on Apr. 18; but, the celebration in Las Vegas will be on Sunday, Apr. 21 to allow for total community involvement. Entertainment, Israeli foods and refreshments (all kosher), a walk-a-thon and booths with displays and cultural items for sale will be provided for your enjoyment at this festive occasion. "More than 3,000 participants will partake of the day's offerings," Co-Chairmen Dr. Neville Pokroy and Marty Loeb project. Admission for the day's activities is as follows: Adults- $3; $2 for students and seniors; and, $1 for kids 6-12. The day will start with a two-mile "Solidarity Walk for Israel" at 10:30 a.m. "Walkers will first be briefed on the 1030 East Twain Avenue Las Vegas, Nevada 89109 (702 ) 732-0556" OJM 'dipwJL bou^ present situation in Israel and on the walk itself," explained Walk-a-thon Chairman Jack Schuster, "they will then begin walking at 11 a.m. from the rear parking lot of the Sands Hotel (enter from Sands Blvd.) and will be led in song by Temple Beth Am Cantorial Soloist Sara Green and Congregation Ner Tamid Cantorial Soloist Bella Schwartz. The walk-a-thon and rally is sponsored by the Nate Mack B'nai B'rith Lodge. Walkers will be given tee-shirts as well as other items. There is no charge to walk. Bring your dancing shoes to the celebration. Israeli songs and music will be featured throughout the day for your listening and dancing pleasure. Israeli and Jewish delicacies such as falafel, hummus, pita bread, borakaus and Israeli salad will be sold throughout the day to tempt your palate. All foods and refreshments served will be kosher and will be available for take-out. Pizza, cole slaw and potatoe salad will be provided as well. If you have been wanting to join or find out more information about any of the Jewish organizations or temples in town, this is the day to have your questions answered. There will be information booths set-up for many of the organizations and temples in addition to cultural displays with items for sale. Other booths will be retail outlets for several businesses. During the day, a drawing will be held for one round-trip airline ticket to Israel on EL AL Airlines. Drawing tickets will be sold for $1 a piece. Businesses and organizations may still rent booths. Tables may be rented by businesses and non-Jewish organizations for $50 a piece and by Jewish non-profit organizations for $25 a piece. Walk-a-thon sponsored by Nate Mack B'nai B'rith Lodge. Approximately 3,000 people are expected to attend. This year's celebration demonstrates solidarity with Israel. There will be entertainment, traditional Jewish and Israeli foods, Israeli folk dancing and booths with displays and cultural items for sale.
