Our adult has close to 40 exciting programs in it. Harry Sax President This has been an action packed year. While we are in one of the roughest times in the 40 years since I've been in Las Vegas, you have stepped up to the plate financially and contributed generously to our temple. For this effort, I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I want to tell you that we on the board of trustees and the temple staff also recognize our obligations to run a"tight ship"and reduce unnecessary expenses whenever we can. We are looking at everything we can do internally to cut our cost of operation. Just to give you one example, we currently spend almost $120,000 annually on our electric bill. Lowering the setting on our programmable thermostats in the winter and raising the temperature in the summer by a few degrees could save us $10,000 to $20,000 in energy costs. There are many mo* opportunities to save money but I think you get the idea, As we move into 2009, it looks like another rough year for the economy. Together we will weather this economic storm. Thanks again for your cooperation. Schmooze with the Rabbi Sunday, January 25 at 9:30 am Here's an opportunity to sit down and talk with the Rabbi in a casual setting. Ask the questions you always wanted to ask in Hebrew school but were afraid to. This program is FREE and open to all. Hot Topics w/Rabbi Akselrad Thursday, Dec 4 at Noon Join Rabbi each month for the"topic du jour", from politics in the Middle East to theology, to current events and how the^ effect us as Jews. Bring a brown-bag lunch and join in the discussion. FREE and open to all. WWW.LVNERTAMID.ORG Vi The close proximity of Chanukah to Christmas has been a challenge to Jewish children for many, many years. But not From the Rabbi always. Prior to World War II and perhaps even into the early Rabbi Sanford Akselrad Wristmas was a time for family, church going, and home made gifts. Chanukah was truly a minor holiday with the observance of the lighting of the chcmukiah and the giving of ge/f-small '60's, very little was done to commercialize either holiday. coins. With the commercialization of both holidays (thank you Madison Avenue), the removal f j lyjsM ? of social barriers between Jews and Christians, and increased rates of inter marriage, more and ' ?? ? more families are in a quandary as to what to do. Educators have often noted that the toddler years are extremely important in forming notions of sharing and identity. For example, a child who goes to a friends home for a birthday party, may initially want to "grab all of the toys" for himself, but is quickly told that those presents are for the birthday child. It is "their" birthday, "not yours". Party favors are often given out as a way of ameliorating the pain. Likewise a child can be taught that "Christmas" is"their" holiday, and "Chanukah" is ours. This is a simple lesson that children can accept and understand. Where we often go astray is in trying to compete with Christmas. We tell our children,"Look they get presents on only one day, we get presents on eight days!" But the truth is, Chanukah can not hold a candle to Christmas. The focus of Christmas by our society is too great, with TV specials, holiday music, the tree, Santa etc. And Chanukah, no matter how we dress it up, is still a minor holiday. Parents need to realize that if the only time they focus on the distinctiveness of a child's Jewishness is this time of year, then the war is lost before the battle begins. We should not simply teach children that we have "Chanukah" instead of "Christmas". We should teach them, we have Chanukah, Tu B'shvat, Purim, Passover, Shavuot, Rosh t^shanah, Yom Kippur, Succot and Shabbat. We should teach them that not only is it"ok"to be different, it is what ^Pkes us special. If we spend a little less time worrying, and more time doing, I think we will make progress. Take a look at your religious life and how you might improve it. How often do you and your children attend services? What about sending your children to Jewish camps? Jewish Day Schools? Beyond Bar/Bat Mitzvah, do you encourage your children to continue on with their Jewish education? Do you have a mezuzah on your home? What about your child's bedroom? Do you observe Shabbat? In short, what makes your family religiously and spiritually Jewish, and not just"ethnically"Jewish? Chanukah is coming. Perhaps the best present you can give your child is a sense of self and identity. Do not let this lesson be relegated to a simple dreidyl game of chance. Let the light of our faith burn brightly during this holiday, and throughout the year. December 2008 3 Just a c? In this unprecedented financial crisis the word 'sanctuary' has taken on a new meaning for so many. I want to share some things we, as a staff and congregation, are doing to provide chesed (caring) to our Temple family so that all may stay connected with our tradition and each other. The Temple is in the process of determining and addressing the many requests from congregants to assist with job search, dues relief and other immediate needs. The Budget and Finance committee has met tirelessly over the past few weeks to look at every department's income and expenses, cutting where we felt we could and even in places where it hurts! Most importantly your board approved no increase in dues for the coming year 2009. We are proud that we offer different ways to make a commitment to Congregation NerTamid. Your membership gives us the strength to fulfill our mission of providing a community for prayer, study, friendship and fun. With an ever increasing need to provide chesed (caring) to those who cannot meet the full financial commitment of membership, those who are financially blessed have the opportunity to have greater participation in our caring community. No enhancement can give you the joy and nachas that comes with knowing that you have fulfilled an act of loving kindness by helping to provide our Congregational experience, and religious education to all, regardless of financial ability. These generous acts of Tzedakah attest to the words,"Through goodness, a Congregation of Greatness." ^hile our congregation depends upon the generosity of major donors, it is the entire congregation's support that makes NerTamid a viable and thriving community. Without each and every one of you, ourTemple would never be able to continue its development as one of the most special congregations in the country. Our hope is that you and your family will consider one of the following campaign levels. We honestly need it now, more than ever. We understand it's the toughest of times for everyone to be giving, but give we must. "As a torch is not diminished though it kindles a million candles, so will he not lose who gives to a good cause." We appreciate each and every member of Congregation NerTamid. Your commitment is important to us and we look forward to serving you and your family. From All the Staff at CNT... The Floppiest of Chanukah Wishes To You and Your Family. The Gary & Lynn Kantor Early Childhood Education Center has been busy! This past month was filled with lots of learning and lots of fun. Depending on their age, children are learning their colors, shapes, numbers, and letters. And much to my pleasure, all the children know a number of body parts and how to count to ten in Hebrew! They also participated in Congregation NerTamid's Mitzvah Day by bringing in clothing for infants that were donated to Baby Bounty. It is amazing to watch these 2,3, and 4 year olds growing to be life-long Jewish learners! Thanksgiving was a big deal in our school. All the thematic learning ended with an All-School Thanksgiving Feast where the children prepared food for the other classes. We gathered together dressed in Thanksgiving garb, ate, and talked about things we are thankful for. And now on to Chanukah...need I say more? No doubt, nearly every child's favorite Jewish holiday. We are preparing for the f owing lights, the smell of latkes, and the smiles of each child as is special holiday approaches. We are excited to now open our doors to children 18 to 28 months old with a new program called Stay & Play. Similar to a Mommy & Me class, I will be getting together with Moms (or other adult caretakers) and their young charges once-a-week for a fun-filled time. We will begin to meet in January 2009.
