Anaheim, Calif. Bulletin (Cir. D 19,113) J^ I3JC JLjP.CB. Est. 1888 By ETTA CORTEZ WHAT STARTED out to be a small, intimate gathering mushroomed into the gigantic "Luv-In" recently held for Gus Giuffre, in the City With A Heart. Watching the people greet him as he entered and then form a gigantic, patient queue to say goodnight to him and Elizabeth at evening's end, one felt the intimate pulse of humanity ... It was a conglomerate turnout . . . housewives, politicos, executives, long-time Las Vegans. In addition to the multi-million dollar entertainment, the audience was studded with people who often serve at or produce benefits. They were all in accord. This was the ultimate in programming. All went as smoothly as a well-rehearsed vehicle. Yet, it was compiled in less than three weeks. The answer is that it was put together by pros with no regard for self-glory. The intent was to do it right for Gus and Liz and that, goal was achieved ... In attendance were people who normally arrive at functions merely to make an appearance and disappear before the festivities draw to a close. Not one person left early . . . This is our FABULOUS town ... and that's for sure. We hope the rumor is true about Bill DeAngelis, who staged the G.G. "Luv-In" to perfection. Word has it he will be appointed Stage Manager of the International Hotel. He deserves it ... a highly talented man. Russ Morgan, who is celebrating his fifth year at the Dunes' Top O' The Strip, had to return to work in order to have a vacation. His lovely wife Shirley insists they traveled 7000 miles in the two months between their Dunes dates. They're back in their gohjus new home with the dozen new additions. We strongly suspect the Morgans will convert one of the rooms into a nursery-away-from-home for grandson Russell Gray. An Island friendship brings Shirley and Russ Morgan in front of the preacher today (Sat.) ... to stand up for two lovely people they met in Honolulu. This afternoon, Nancy Ken- yon becames the bride of famous com- /poser, cartoonist Walt Bohrer at the Little Church of the West. Naturally, dinner at the Top O' The Strip follows. Donn Arden is introducing a new twist during rehearsals for the D.I.'s "Pzazz 70 & All That Jazz, Baby." He's calling one number ?╟÷ "Libby Morgan" ?╟÷ combining the selling points of Libby Holman and Helen Morgan. Donn is an expert on La Morgan. There aren't many who know that the torchy chanteuse once appeared in his productions. You can bet Donn is intensely aware of those yesterdays as he updates them for tomorrow's "Pzazz!" ^f We suggest that Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong and Ethel Merman make a point of catching this version, if only to feast their eyes on the scenery from their early showcases. Young DeMille brought a lot of favorable publicity to our FLV when he appeared on the June 8 Ed Sullivan TViewer. Not only was the Circus Nejw Spectacular In Rehearsal At^dMSpa r i The Desert Inn began rehearsals for its new million-dollar plus super spectacular "Pzazz 70 and Al That Jazz. . Baby" which will world premiere at the plush Las Vegas resort hotel on July 10. The cast of the Frank Sennes-Donn Arden production is now so large that each group of performers is wearing an identification "uniform" until they become personally recognizable by Arden and his creative staff. And, what uniforms! The showgirls are rehearsing in bikinis. The distaff dancers are outfitted in midriff leotards, and the girl singers are wearing their mini skirts. There are no standard rehearsal clothes for the handful of male members of | the cast. Harvey Warren's sets are nearing completion and although the Desert Inn has a stage larger than any theatre; on Broadway, they are overflowing beyond the confines of the hotel building and a temporary j shelter has been built to protect: them. "Pzazz 70" production numbers will focus on the most exciting eras of different American cities, opening with Las Vegas today and closing with a salute to Duke Ellington's New York in the smoldering tempo of the time when the Cotton Club was king. Margaref^aiid Dave Epstein celebrate their 45th wedding anni today . . . Florence Eldridge and Fredric March, their 42d, on the "tick (3)" location in Colusa, Calif. . . . Today, Jimmy Stewart is guest speaker at the International Big Game and Wild Life Conservation Convention in San Antonio. "The things Gloria gets me into," Jimmy's comment. P.S.: Gloria departs on safari June 23, while Stewart starts "Cheyenne Social Club" . . . Dennis Weaver goes on golden hours today on "Sledge," delayed by rains in Spain . . . The delay also forces Jim Garner to pull outta the June 15 Baja 500 race?╟÷he was to appear for sequences in his pic, "The Racing Scene" . . . Bob Hope hopped to Nassau after the Miami preem of "How To Commit Marriage," continues on to openings of the pic in Houston and Dallas . . . And talking of flying, the special aerial effects in Donn Arden's new "Pzazz 70" at the D.I. will be handled by Peter Foy . . . Samantha Eggar winged in from "Walking Stick" London lensing to see her new Brentwood manse, decorated via long-distance fone . . . Busman's holiday: Larry Storch in to see Professor Corey at the Playboy Club. For New- ;Pzazz' Show Expansion in every direction is underway at the ] Desert Inn to be ready for Donn Arden's July 10 : opening of his latest spectacle, ''Vztlz^ 70! And All \ That Jazz, Baby." A building addition to the backstage is being constructed to hold new sets, stagehands now total i DUKE, Page 13) Uuuu4~-fmm Page lj j 30, wardrobe personnel tipped to 10, 10 people to work ! the lighting booth and the orchestra increased by 18.
