Rab?bi Dosick is a gifted educator and author who lectures and conducts workshops nationwide on topics con?cerning ethics, spirituality, and evolv?ing human consciousness. Rabbi Dosick?s weekend with us will focus on Jewish Renewal, or renewing Judaism fgr ourselves and for our community. ^B.?bi Dosick?s inviting and enticing dis- ^issions are designed to show today?s Jews howto rediscover authentic Jew?ish spiritual beliefs, which will lead us to a heightened awareness of God, self, and a more meaningful lifestyle. Rabbi Dosick has authored several books, including When Life Hurts: A Book of Hope, Dancing with God: Ev?eryday Steps to Jewish Spiritual Re?newal, Golden Rules: The Ten Ethical Values Parents Need to Teach Their Children, and Living Judaism: the Com?plete Guide to Jewish Belief, Tradition, and Practice. Rabbi Dosick will begin his Scholar In Residence weekend during Friday evening services on January 22 at 7:30 pm. The following morning, Saturday, January 23 join Rabbi Dosick at 9:30 am for a continental breakfast followed by morning services and a lecture and discussion designed to share some concepts of the Jewish renewal move?ment. Discussed in the aforemen?tioned books, as Biblical Judaism gave way to Rabbinical Judaism 2000 years ago, so, too, does it appear that Rab?binic Judaism is now giving way to Ju?daism?s third era - Neshamah (?Soul?) Judaism, which is characterized by a more intense personal relationship with God. Questions so profound that our parents are at a loss as to how to pro?vide an adequate answer. Searching for answers given to them by their parents doesn?t seem to help but only adds to the inadequacy of the situation. With big round eyes our little child asks, "Mommy, where is G-d?? Or when a dear one has died, ?Daddy, is Grandma in heaven with G-d? But I want her here with me! Why did G-d take Grandma away from me??? These are difficult questions to answer. And they are asked again and again in many different ways no matter what our age. The words may change a bit, but the wondering continues. And if a trip to our local bookstore is any indi?cation, there are no shortage of books on the subject from Kushner?s When Children Ask About G-d to G-d a Biog?raphy by Jack Miles. Books such as these try and examine our core beliefs about G-d and provide a sense of per?spective and understanding to these ultimate questions. They also provide a historical context by which we can examine our own beliefs. In Torah class we examined a very beau?tiful passage in the book of Exodus 33:18>-23. Moses is told by G-d that He will be with the people as they jour?ney through the desert to the prom?ised land. Moses, still unsure of himself, asks G-d for reassurance-and the im?possible: ?Oh, let me behold Your Pres?ence!" To which G-d answers: ?I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim before you the name Lord and the grace that I grant and the compassion that I show. But you can?not see My face, for man may not see Me and live.? But G-d continues: ?See, there is a place near Me. Station your?self on the rock and, as My presence passes by, I will put you in a cleft of the rock and shield you with My hand until I have passed by. Then I will take My hand away and you will see My back; but My face must not be seen.? What a wondrous passage! Moses, despite all of the miracles that he has witnessed, wants what we all want-to see G-d! Like us, miracles are all around him, but that doesn?t seem to be enough. Moses needs to see G-d face to face, to know G-d fully. But that is not possible. The Bible teaches us that our faith is what allows us to see G-d most clearly. We see G-d by watching G-d pass by us and looking to where He has been. In short, we follow G-d, by following in G-d?s footsteps. We know G-d, by knowing where G-d has been. For those who are still searching, still wondering, this passage provides some guidance. But it also provides a pre?scription for answers. By doing mitzv- ot, by studying, by doing the right thing-even when no one is watching, by being more ?G-d like? in our relationships and dealings with others, then we can feel closerto G-d. if what I have written in this column has stirred some questions and interest, then I encourage you to attend a very special Scholar-ln-Residence weekend January 22-24. Our guest scholar, Rabbi Wayne Dosick is a fabulous speaker and very much involved in the area of spirituality and Jewish ethics. Look elsewhere in the bulletin for a full description, but let me take this op?portunity to remind you to invite your friends to attend each of his lectures and discussions. There will be programs Friday night, Saturday morning and evening and Sunday morning. You won?t want to miss it. tHgBBiSanford^sehid (Worsfiip gervices l January 1 Shabbat Services 7:30pm Oneg Sponsored by the Sisterhood January 8 New Member Shabbat/ Congregant of the Year w/Adult Choir 7:30pm Oneg Sponsored by the Membership Committee January 9 Jaime Michelin BarMitzvah 10:00am Kiddush sponsored by the Bale Family January 15 Melissa Toffel Bat Mitzvah 7:30pm Oneg Sponsored by the Toffel Family Alternative Service in BeitTefillah 7:30pm January 16 Melissa Goldstein Bat Mitzvah 10am Kiddush sponsored by the Goldstein Family Torah Study 10:00am January 22 Scholar-in-Residence Shabbat Services 7:30pm Oneg Sponsored by the Sisterhood January 23 Morning Service 10:00am Coffee & Bagels sponsored by Brotherhood January 29 2nd Grade Shabbat Dinner 6:15pm Shabbat Services 7:30pm Oneg Sponsored by the Sisterhood January 30 David Klein Dzarnoski Bar Mitzvah 10am Kiddush sponsored by the Klein Family Torah Study 10:00am * January 1999 Temple Board Members Bob Unger President Drew Levy VP Administration David Mendelson VP Ways & Means Ira Spector VP Membership David Stahl, PhD VP Religious Activities Scott Stolberg Lynn Sasso Rita Goldstein Ruth Urban Mel Hallerman Sylvia Beller Frances Klamian Jacky Rosen Jon Sparer Jere' Davis Esther Saltzman Sharna Blumenfeld Mindy Unger-Wadkin Sandy Stolberg Steve Joseph Charles Kallick David Lieberman Jerry Gordon Cal Lewis Eileen Kollins Kenneth Schnitzer Dr. David Wasserman Dr. Steve Kollins Michael Cherry Dr. Bernard Farrow ugene Kirshbaum* abbi Sanford Akselrad VP Education VP Social Treasurer Secretary Trustee Trustee Trustee Trustee-Membership Trustee Trustee-Membership Trustee-Youth Trustee-Library Trustee-Bulletin Sisterhood Brotherhood NTTY TNT Past President Past President Past President Past President Past President Past President Past President Past President Past President Ex Officio *Deceased Mternate ShahSat ?Evening ?Worship Januan) 15 January 29 Je6ruanj5 9v(arcn5 2vtarcfil9 JiprifS J[priC30 ESSAGE FROM OUR TEMPLE PRESIDENT I am writing this article while we are in the midst of operating this year's Gift Wrap booth at the Gal?leria at Sunset Mall. Once again our members have come through, roviding lots of help to Aydie in er effort to run things smoothly. Thanks to all who worked so many hours during the holidays to make this fundraiser so successful. We all owe Aydie a big thank you for running the booth for this third year in a row. It is a big job for anyone willing to dedicate so much time to the temple at a busy time of the ear. If we are all real nice to ydie, we may get one more year out of her. I would also like to thank the management of the Gal?leria for providing the booth and gift wrap supplies at no cost to the temple. This will be a great rela?tionship for CNT for years to come. Please show our gratitude and shop at the Galleria. They also provide us with gift certificates to sell through our scrip program. The temple earns five dollars for every one hundred dollars spent at the mall. Our program director, Shawna Park?er, has decided to accept a posi?tion with Clark County. This is a wonderful career opportunity for Shawna and we wish her well. She will stay an active member of the congregation and will be volunteer?ing for many events. Shawna plans on staying through the Scholar-in- Residence weekend later this month and then moving over to the Coun?ty. If you know of anyone who is qualified and interested in this position, please contact Monty or myself as soon as possible. In the next few months the Board of Trustees will be forming a long range planning committee to look at the future of our congregation. We will be including several mem?bers at large in the planning pro?cess along with members of the Board ana staff. If you are inter?ested in participating or have been involved in a similar process at an?other temple, I would like to hear from you. Congratulations again to Maxine Gratz, our Congregant of the Year. I look forward to the evening planned in her honor on January 8th and hope to see a big turnout for our New Member Service that night. Have a Happy and Healthy 1999! ?Bob PLAINING SET FOR 2000 BAM / BAT MTZVAHS We are beginning to schedule Bar/Bat Mitzvahs for the calendar year 2000. If you are planning or expect to have a Bar/Bat Mitzvah in 2000 and have not received a packet from the office by January 5, 1999, please call Karen Levine and discuss it with her. It is essential that we begin planning for your date now as time can slip away and the dates become limited as we approach 2000. Wl SfzeeiaL January 1999 r/)lace (Bel&ng, Happy new year! I am so pleased with everything our Adult and Jr. Choirs accomplished during the holiday season. Our kids out-did themselves at each of their performances and brought much "nachas" to their parents and to all who heard them sing. A special thank you to Lori Frankl for all of her help and to Lola Rivera for inviting us to join in the community sing-along. The Adult choir performed a wonderful mitzvah by participating in a special candlelight vigil service for World AIDS Day at the First Congregational Church. The service touched the hearts of all who attended and was a nice addition to our schedule. We are starting off the new year with many exciting events at the Temple which will include New Member Sabbath and our Scholar in Residence service. We will be having special music at both of these services including our very own Jau Poster on clarinet. I hope you will come join us in song ana worship. I am very much looking forward to attending the Reform movements' Cantor's convention at the end of the month. I always come back with a renewed sense of spirit and many new ideas. CoNqREQArioN N er Tam id Golden Chai The Senior's organization of CNT had a wonderful December with two spectacular meetings. At our first meeting of December, we elected new officers, were entertained by Toby Roselinksi and welcomed home George Lipshaw. At our second meeting in December, we had a Chanukkah Party with live entertain?ment and honored our 5- and 10- year Golden Chai members. Our new officers will be installed by Rabbi Akselrad during our next meeting on January 7th. Golden Chai welcomes one and all to our meetings; we meet every first and third Thursday of the month, beginning at 11:00am for a bagel brunch, followed by a short business meeting and a program. After the official meeting adjourns at 1:00pm, the card tables are broken out anyone who wishes to stay and p^B a card game. Drop in ana give it?r try, make new friends and get reacquainted with old ones. By the way, Golden Chai is 18 years old this year, and that is a special Chai! We wish everyone a Happy New Year. December Gth found all of our staff with their lesson plans done and excited to teach. It snowed! There was almost two inches of the wet stuff on the ground when a handful of hearty souls arrived at religious school. The thrill of it all set them off in a frenzy of excitement and fun. It looked as if students and teachers had just digested a meal that was off the charts in processed sugar. We adjusted our day to allow them to have fun, finish Chanukah projects and still find time to study Hebrew. We try so hard to plan ahead. The calendar for the year 2000 is almost completed at CNT. Bar and Bat Mitzvah dates will soon be posted and we are all marking our calendars with special life cycle occasions ^B)m graduation to weddings. Let's ^rake a closer look at our planning process. What Jewish things will your children be doing this summer? On January 10th we will be hosting a community wide Jewish Camp Fair. Many camps from nearby states will be attending as well as local ones. Please plan to attend and find out what is available for your child. Children are to bring a Drown bag lunch which they can eat following religious school and will be entertained with camp songs by Dustin Tiep. The program begins at 1:00pm. Parents MUST attend in order for their children to stay. Feel free to invite other parents and children to join in this informative program. There will be craft activities for children to do while parents discuss business. Looking towards February (already), we have our Mitzvah Day program. Everyone in our school as well as our Congregation will be participating. The small gifts and the small amount of time we give can change someone's life. The date is Sunday, February 7th at 10:30am. Our annual Purim Carnival which is a major support of the religious school will take place February 28th from 11:00am until 2:00pm. Scott Stolberg, VP of Education has been working hard on this for many months. The carnival is fun but it takes a lot of work to make it a success. We need your help. Please contact me at the Temple office if you can give us a little of your time. The money raised at this carnival has helped to make our school the successful institution that provides your child with a stable Jewish educational foundation. As you have read, we do plan, we do provide great programs, but some?times we have to adjust. I hope that with our staff, our students and parental support, we will only change our plans due to inclement weather. CNT ^ PRESCH001T December was an exciting and fun- filled month for all of the students and staff of CNT PRESCHOOL. We all worked hard preparing for our Chanukah program. It was our first production and we certainly were Broadway material. Who knows where we'll go from here. It was delightful to hear our little ones say the blessings and sing the traditional Chanukah melodies. Our youngsters also enjoyed cooking and eating Latkes, and Sufganot. Our Mitzvah project was a grand success. Thank you to all the parents and youngsters who partic?ipated (our adopted family loved the gifts). The children each presented their parents with a lovely plate they designed themselves, in beautifully wrapped paper, also hand made. The youngsters made holiday cards for tne patients at Sunrise Hospitj^ Rabbi Akselrad read us a Chanukah story; what a treat to hear him read to us, about the Rug Rats, who knew they were Jewish? A Mazel Tov to Tali Student and her family and Ron Johna and his family on the birth of their baby brothers. This month we are celebrating Martin Luther King's birthday. Our school is also getting ready to dedicate and plant our own CNT preschool garden. A big hug and Kiss to Larry, Jacky, and Miranda Rosen for their generosity in establishing this garden for all of our students to enjoy (the Dedication will take place February Is*) More information about this date will be coming. Our new semester will be starting this month. We only have a few spots left in our preschool. If you want your child or grandchild to receive a auality Jewish and Secular early childhood education call us at the CNT office 733-6292. Lois?Bergman January 1999 Jewish # Education for the Adult CNT offers many educational opportunities for the adult learner because it is our firm belief that today's Reform Jews must be able to make educated and informed choices about how they will live as Jews today and in the future. The more we learn, the more our lives will be enhanced, and the better able we will be to pass our Jewish identity on to the coming genera?tions. Before planning its program?ming for the upcoming year, the Adult Education Committee would like to hear from temple members who can teach classes, facilitate seminars, or design workshops on topics targeting the adult learner. A benefit of living in Las Vegas is that so many people are from some?where else, and we as a communi?ty benefit from their varied ^experiences. Perhaps you have ^Blught a class at a different tem- ^^jle, or attended a seminar that you know you could lead here if given the chance. If this sounds like you, please call Katherine Scott, Adult Committee Chair at 433-6407 or the Temple Office.
