W QUEST Community Newspapei Re-builtlina the old days at Southpoii Pier is ready for a start WORK is expected to start in April on the new Southport Pier which is to be built out over the Broadwater at the end of Nerang Street at a cost of $2 million. Local restaurateur, Mimi Pouios, told the Sun that he was ready to formally sign J the lease agreement to operate the pier with the Gold Coast Waterways Authority once the Gold Coast City Council had advised him on car parking facilities and costs. Statham Queensland Pty Ltd, the Brisbane-based building company, has been appointed project construction manager and Managing Director, Mr Alf Vockier, said that the company expected to begin driving the piles in April, with completion date towards the end of November. Mr Pouios said that he had submitted the successful lease proposal to the Waterways Authority and wanted to see building begin as soon as possible. ?╟úThe only thing that is holding us up at the moment is the car parking,?╟╓* be said. ?╟úI understand that the Gold Coast City Council is looking at the whole question of parking in that area and I cannot seal the deal and sign the lease until I knot what 1 face there.?╟Ñ Architect Michael Witty, of Miami, said that the pier would be built on tie site of the old pier just south of the swimming pool (the first Southport pier lasted from 1887 to 1900, when it was destroyed by fire. A second pier was built in 1926 but was again a victim of fire in 1932. It was rebuilt the same year but demolished in 1969). Mr Witty said that the new pier would cover an area of 65 metres by 30 netres on two levels and would be built entirely over the water on 92 piles. Facilities will include two restaurants, one a family-style maritime restaurant on the lower-front level and a second, up-market restaurant incorporating a night club above. There will also be a cafe, coffee shop and take-away seafood bar, a souvenir shop and several office suites. STMZ4SDAZZLING~SH0W Starz, the rich and lavish opening show at the Conrad international, is a costum* ing extravaganza. Designed by Jerry Jackson who also wrote, directed and choreographed the ?╟úMusical Journey into Time?╟Ñ, -they brought "oohs?╟Ñ and ?╟úaahs?╟Ñ from the capacity crowd at the press preview night on Tuesday. From a 1762 Venetian capsule through to ?╟úStar Wars?╟Ñ gadgetry, the costumes were the scene stealers in what is undoubtedly the best musical production ever presented on the Gold Coast. The show was produced by Jim McDonald and stars Barclay Shaw, Chuck McKinney, George Carl and Ron and Joleen Watson. It?╟╓s an exciting night out and mercifully without the Coast?╟╓s usual bare boobs. A full review appears next week.
