Silver Year Flashes in Ice Show By JAY JOSLYN The silver anniversary edition of "Holiday on Ice" turns the company s tried and true ingredients into another completely predictable but entirely satisfying e'ven.ingof entertainment. The Milwaukee born, inter- nationally famous show opened at the Arena Thursday night for the benefit of the Catholic Knights Insurance Society. The public is sure to flock in, starting Friday. The hallmarks of "Holiday on Ice" are exciting scenic details of lights and settings and sumptuous costuming along with athletic comedy. But what sets even these exemplary elements apart from all other such enterprises is the high quality of the execution by its fine looking skaters. First Rate Reserves Even the second line performers are top notch as was proved Thursday when Linda Adams and Carol Johnson had to step in to take over for Grete Borgen, who is recovering from a broken right leg. The whirling Ronnie Robertson is listed as the show's star ?╟÷ and he is a fascinating skater ?╟÷ but in this cast he is a star among stars. Milwaukee's Ray Balmer, the faithful Alice Quessy, the lovely Marei Langenbein and even comic Alfredo Mendoza in company with the delightful Darolyn Prior produce poetry on ice ?╟÷ if a cliche can be excused. For this reviewer, however, the moments of greatest pleasure were supplied by the excitingly beautiful teamwork of Tommy Allen and his lovely wife, Juanita Percelly. They add a quality of style that elevates their work above the expected perfect execution. Holiday Setting The setting creator Donn Arden has provided this season involves the calendar of holidays. He makes the most of the seasonal possibilities of New New Year's, St. Valentine's Day, Easter, Independence Day, Halloween and Christmas. Mendoza and John Ladue have a hungover New Year's Day for their Ole Houn' Dawg's wonderful fun and Paul Andre (Cleopatra) and Johnny Leechi (A n t h o ny) make a shambles of a Roman holiday. April Fools' Day is used to make fun of the mod world with a collection of wonderfully imaginative "animals." Special effects are provided by the clever Cook family, Werner and Denise Muller's skating chimps and a bit of audience participation with Kossmayer's mules. A capacity audience of 8,900 persons saw the show Thursday. LOCAL HEWS PAGE 5, PART 1 FRIDAY, JAN. 30,1970 -ll * A A.f I St. Valentine's Day was recalled in a skating feature during the Holiday on Ice preview in the Arena Thursday night. Tommy Allen and Juanita Percelly swirled around the rink as stars of the number. The show officially begins Friday and will run through Sunday, Feb. 8. The show was born in Milwaukee 25 years ago. ?╟÷Sentinel Photo by Roy Zalesky
