PERFECTIONIST ?╟÷ Director Donn Arden outlines a dance routine for his line leaders, John LaDue and Lucy Carpenter, who will in turn interpret it for chorus members and aid in conducting rehearsal sessions so the August 14 World Premiere of Holiday On Ice 1969 in Municipal Coliseum will be, as always, "bigger and better than ever!" Early Reports Indicate Bigger HOI Than Ever i>?╜ t??atp 17TT7TTYS .fpPt tall. This Coliseum is a By PAT FIELDS Fast, faster, fastest! That's the pattern for Holiday On Ice 1969, judging from rehearsal reports at Municipal Coliseum. Art Johnson, the new public relations man replacing Art Seelig this year, turned in a tentative program of feature numbers that looks far longer than in previous years, but he assures the running time will be a good deal shorter than ever before. Ben Stabler, music director and orchestra leader, complains of eye trouble from fitting "so many more notes" in this year's scores, but explains that this means the music is in stepped- up tempo and will really take less time to play. So how about the performers who must fit their steps to the jolly rhythm, and who's goosing them right up to the endurance peak? Tired? "No, inspired," says John LaDue, leader of the men's line. "Interesting, and a real challenge," says Lucy Carpenter, who heads up the girls in the chorus. Donn Arden, the new director from Hollywood, gets credit for the strenuous rehearsal sessions. No posting of times for each of the lines and each of the stars. Everybody is expected to be "on call" at any hour. Line rehearsals start at 9 a.m. and sometimes end at 6 p.m. with a two-hour break for lunch, but often there are recalls for perfecting sessions at night. Arden has two assistants on the ice with line and feature performers for some numbers, but in the main it is John and Lucy who interpret his choreographic ideas and then pass them on to the other skaters. Can he perform these steps himself? "He can. That's^ what keeps us on our toes," said LaDue, trying to reverse positions for a teaching demonstration. "Watch Roxanne Maxcy and the other show girls this year," said Lucy. "They're^longer ?╟÷JUS* ?║]p^p^80u^^?Σ≤^uoT big, big stage. I'm not accus- jtomed to working with small people; it amazes me to see little Anna Galmarini perform so fantastically." It's going to be a most interesting show to watch, and almost certain to draw the annual comment: "Bigger and better than ever!" | For a bare outline of the program, following the orchestral overture, there's: "Hello I New York," in three scenes; "Harrigan's Hooligans," featuring the Cook family; "Pooch Parade," real pets and Houn J Dog, too; "Calling All Cars!", comedy teams; "Jungalero," voodoo yet, "Banana Brigade", Werner Muller's chimps; and "Astaire Time," Arden's biggest production number, featuring Ronnie Robertson and Marei Langenbein; then comes intermission. , Second half: "Rock in' Happy," showing off line perfection; "The Happy, Crazy Clow n," Anna Galmarini; "Prose, Pose and Panic," Alfredo Mendoza and Johnny Leech; "The Gates of Granada," Ole!; "Hit the Deck," Paul Andre, Johnny Leech, Gerry Willis, Lito, etc.; "Star Time," in five scenes all depicting movie favorites of all times.
