SKELTON CONCERT Las Vegas Sun Newspapers ron erickson 7/24 An estimated 2,000 persons proved yesterday that Red Skelton is as capable a song writer as he is a clown. A standing ovation and cheers rocked the Sands Hotel Grand Ballroom following the Second Annual Concert of music composed by Skelton and played by the Las Vegas "Pops?ǥ Orchestra. The program, presented by Jack Entratter, Sands president and show producer, included a wide array of music from soft waltzes to spirited marches and a number of innovations in tempos and instru- mentation. Skelton, who composes where ever he might be by use of a small portable tape recorder, included in the program some recent composition including several which will soon be released on the Liberty record 1 oK,,1 JL 0 Others were based on Skelton's world-wide travels such as "Nikko Gardens," "Moonlight on Fuji," "London Tower," "Istanbul Express," "Russian Sleigh-ride," and "Women of Athens." A number of the selections were also in dedication such as "Now She's Eighteen," a song written for Red's daughter, Valentina. The orchestra, conducted by Don Ferris and directed by Antonio Morelli, was composed of Las Vegas musicians and based on a symphonic orchestra instrumentation. A large string section plus a harp and special arrangements for a mandolin added to create the fifty-eight piece ensemble.
