Yacht Club, will be held today at Lake Mead. ?√ßflmm ?╟úA Malibu Outrigger Holi- day?╟Ñ is the name of the event to be sponsored by the Sands Hotel. The boats to be entered are patterned after the swift native crafts used in the South Seas. The boats are new to the Ameri- can racing scene but are grow- ing rapidly in popularity. AT PRESENT, approxi- mately 100 boats are active in the racing schedule, but more than 1,000 boats are expected to be launched next spring. The reason for the increased interest is two - fold. First, the Malibu outrigger is one of the fastest boats in the world for its size and yet is ex- tremely stable and safe. Secondly, it is relatively inex- pensive complete with dacron sail and all running gear. The outriggers are 18 - feet in length and carry 200 feet of sail. FLANKING the main hull is a 10 - foot outrigger and the space between is spanned by deck boards ideal for sunning for the non - racing sailor. The boats easily accommodate four persons, but when racing, & crew of two is used. Sunday?╟╓s race is expected to prove one of the year?╟╓s best outrigger tests. Unpredictable winds and currents at Lake Mead may present a top challenge to the Californians who have never sailed in this area before. AT PRESENT, three Las Vegas boats are being readied for next season and one out- rigger is already being raced by a local crew. That boat, owned by Joe Buck, has proven a top com- petitor and is expected to prove to be a threat Sunday. Buck said that part of the reason for the race is to stimu- late interest in sail racing throughout this area. ?╟úWe hope it will convince others to take part in sail racing as a family recreation and recreation sail- ing as a hobby,?╟Ñ Buck said. THE SANDS race has attract- ed a number of television and motion picture personalities who are club members and int- erested outrigger sailors. The races will begin at 1 p.m. near the Lake Mead Marina and will be visible from many areas near the marina basin. LOOK mM i SAILING MASCOT?╟÷Pretty Carol Foster, a dancer at the Sands Hotel, will add a touch of beauty to the ?╟úMalibu Outrigger Holiday,?╟Ñ to be presented Sunday at Lake Mead. The races, sponsored by the hotel, will attract a large delegation of out- rigger racing fans from the Malibu, California Yacht Club as Avell as other racing groups. rit rnting round |ment| )f thef was lead, iome tests sway || I race jj {Fight! Arid now, even the outrigger boat racers are having their own little annual competition. The sport that has pr.oyed so popular around Santa Monica has been intro- duced ;to Lake Mead with much success. And the Mal- ibu Yacht Club played the key part in the introduction. Success On A Quick Venture A local sailor, Joe Buck, provided the inspiration! for file idea. He interested the .$j.jxds in sponsoring it I on short notice.
