In the same vein, Bob Alkire addressed the group concerning the recent proposal by United Air Lines that it discontinue scheduled service to Elko and Ely. After a lengthy discussion of the subject (which included suggestions on alternatives), it was decided to place the State Chamber on record as being in opposition to the proposed discontinuance of service (by U. A. L. to Elko and Ely) on basically the same grounds that the State Chamber found relative to its opposition to the discontinuance of passenger train service through Northern Nevada. A motion that the State Chamber oppose the discontinuance of service to Elko and Ely by U. A. L. was made by Wallie Warren and seconded by Les Pearce. Motion passed. A resolution outlining the State Chamber1 s opposition is to be drafted, printed and distributed to all officials and official bodies concerned with this action. Consideration of what part the State Chamber might take in a state-wide program to encourage the business community to hire more of the "hard-core" unemployed was discussed at some length. It was the consensus of opinion that Northern Nevada does not have an acute problem in this area at this time, Plath said that the Southern part of the state should not be ignored, however. No further action on this matter was forthcoming. Les Pearce said that he feels that the state1 s employment security program needs a complete overhaul, but that the business community should help continue some parts of this program after a long, hard look at the situation. Many of those present agreed. Pearce mentioned the threat of Federal intervention concerning hiring practices pertaining to minorities in the radio station business. He said that those who do not readily comply with the latest directives from Washington will surely lose their licenses to operate broadcasting stations. On the subject of State Chamber participation in a state-wide program to encourage business men to become more active in the political party of their choice during the 1968 elections, President Plath said that the State Chamber should encourage all businessmen to become more active in politics. President Plath called on Ralph Crosser, chairman of the State Chamber's Congressional Action Committee, for a report on the recent activities of his committee. Crosser said that he did not have a formal report, but he urged that individuals communicate direct with their congressmen on the various issues in which they*re interested. Sam Harrison spoke on the need for more Congressional Action Committees at the local chamber level. He urged that more local chambers in Nevada be encouraged to start such groups. - 4 -
