July 12, 2004 Dear Board Member: As you know, the Board Meeting on July 7th ended with general confusion at 10 pm. Steve Stein and four other board members said they would resign. I have subsequently heard from all those who had considered resigning, except Steve, that they would stay on the Board, at least until some of our problems clear up. I trust I will hear from Steve shortly concerning his plans for the near future. It is my firm belief that resignations only compound our problems. I urge all board members to remain on the board until our upcoming elections in January. We were unable to vote after Frank Master left because there was no quorum. It is important for all board members to attend meetings and vote on issues that critically affect our Temple. We should have an Election Committee in place by September, so the elections will not be delayed as they were last year. At the present time, without hearing from Steve, there is a vacuum in our administration. I can?t really take over as president or acting president until I hear from Steve that he is resigning. With High Holidays in two months, we have to make plans for the future. Rabbi is considering retiring, but we have no indication of when this might happen. I realize the Ritual Committee has begun to make plans but I think we need more involvement from the board for related issues, such as membership. Jeff Klein will also help us with High Holiday plans and other administrative problems we may have. Arleen Turok has been kind enough to give me some advice and I hope she will continue to assist me. Stu Struhl has put the Administration Committee on hold for a month. Since he was responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Temple, problems will arise that need immediate attention. I can?t attend to everything, but please give me a call if it is urgent. Until I hear from Steve, I will do what I can to keep the Temple affairs in order. I will take it upon myself to call meetings of the Board and Executive Committee. The Ritual Committee, Jeff Klein, Stu Struhl, and Neal Ross and I should meet with Rabbi in the next week. We may need to have Executive Committee meetings and/or Board Meetings more frequently. (At the present time the next board meeting is August 11th.) I welcome any comments you may have concerning this matter. My home phone is 233-9378 and my cell is 845-3177. cc: Rabbi Hecht Meera Kamegai First Vice President, Temple Beth Am
