The best of black culture, as manifested, for example, in
jazz or prophetic black church, refuses to put whites or
Jews on a pedestal or in the gutter.
Every person of African descent in America has been
affected on some level by racism, but many have spent their
energy creating, as West indicators, the best of black culture;
growing past the crisis, rather than ranting about them.
Africans in America, prohibited the practice of our own
religions, blended our intense and emotional rituals with
Christianity to develop a new form of worship. We defined
ourselves as gifted, visionary musicians and sang about our
frustrations in the blues and our hope in spirituals. We took
European musical instruments and created jazz.
For years we were denied the opportunity to participate in
major-league athletics, but we overcame that as we have
many other obstacles to participation in American life.
Hurdles remain, but we know what to do and that we must
do it. This is the attitude that makes us great. This is who
we are.
I spoke with an agent about taking a trip to New Orleans to participate in the Mardi Gras Celebration,
1999. Here are the rates:

Page. We are seeking help and ideas from any soror who
has expertise in this area or just suggestions on what should
be included.
Scholarship Winners
The following young ladies are the 1998 Scholarship

Tyesha Sykes, and Sherbella Glasper.
There will be a reception honoring the scholarship
winners on Saturday, May 2 at 2pm at Imani Hall.

Mid-Year Evaluation(Standards)
Soror Jacki Brown, Standards Chairman, will have
copies of the mid-year evaluation at the May meeting.
Sorors, please take time to fill it out. The results will
be presented in June along with a brief discussion
about the Standards Committee and its responsibilities

Slicing a piece of New
Orleans through sumptuous
cuisine and soul-stirrin’ jazz,
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc., transformed the Rio Suite
Hotel into the Crescent City
last Saturday.
The smell of southern
delights, like shrimp etoufee,
catfish and hush puppies,
wafted through the air as local
group Strength Inc., pumped
out zydeco, blues and jazz for.

guests at the sorority’s first
Mardi Gras Ball.
Mardi Gras is the last day
before Lent, Shrove Tuesday,
and is a day of carnival
celebrations, especially in Rio
De Janiero and New Orleans.
Dr. Al Gourrier, a local
educator, emceed the program
and helped crown Willa White
and her husband, Kenneth, the
ball’s first king and queen.
Gourrier also led the crowd,
which was adorned with
festivebeads and multi-colored
publisher Ramon Savoy,

The sorority’s Theta Theta
Omega chapter was founded
in 1965. The sorority itself was
founded in 1908 at Howard
University in Washington
DC., and is the first Greekletter
sorority for African-
American women. The sorority
aims to provide service to all
mankind.
Patti Hester, the Mardi Gras
ball’s coordinator, said the
support for the first annual
event was
overwhelming." We’re
planning to make next year’s
event even better,” she said.
