9 The HoustonPress WEDNESDAY, NOV. 11,1959 The Show Case Skipper Fought War With Glockenspiel; Now Loew?╟╓s Organist By PAUL HOCHULI Press Amusements Editor The announcement that Skipper Trevathon, one of our local lads, would take over the Baldwin Organ spot on Loew?╟╓s stage tomorrow came as a sort of shock to me. No, ?╟╓?╟╓shock?╟Ñ isn?╟╓t the word. ?╟úSurprise?╟Ñ fits it better. I shouldn?╟╓t be shocked at. any- thing Skip does musically, since he?╟╓s one of our better musicians. Anyway, I knew Skip as a Grade A piano player, both with full or- chestra, small combo, or solo. He?╟╓s, done ?╟╓em all in the course . HOCHULI of musical ?╟╓-events, and has done them all excellently. So it should come as no shock that Skip skippers a mean1 organ ' over the musical waves. In my book, Skip ranks with Peck Kelly, of whom there is no whomer, and has been a friend of a mine since away back there before the war World War II, not the Spanish American. Which reminds me of Skip and- that war. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps,', was sent to Ellington Field, where' the commander wanted the best dance band he could muster. "- % |g , j ' M 11111lf|B ?╟ 1 |S ( New Weapon B|| -Kit Reid,, who is aS fine bn .trumpet as Skip is on piano, was commissioned to build the' organization. He did, and naturally tappe Skip for the 88ing. If I re- call correctly, Don Cannon al 50 played in the orchestra f )r' '/M spell before being, transferred to the border, where a higher- rankingofficer grabbed h^4 for the band. V mander knew Army regulations as well as music. He requisi- tioned a glockenspiel he certi- fied as a march band instru- ment. Skip stayed on, and. I often ; kid him as the only man who fought the war with a glocken- spiel. Be that as it may, Loew?╟╓s pa- trons are in for' some great keyboarding starting tomorrow. The picture portion is ?╟úHouse of the Seven Hawks,?╟Ñ starring Robert Taylor and Nicole Mau- rey, . Stuff and Such CHIT-CHAT: Ralph Smith, who departed Houston to pro- mote Tights in Dallas, has put one foot back into local opera- tion. Tonight, Ralph and part- ner,. Sammy Scaiton, are open- ing a ndtery in Ralph?╟╓s old location, 517 Louisiana, now call it the Gaity Club. Fea- tured will be New. Orleans take-it-off gals, Pixie Lynn and Debbie Doll. Ralph stressed this is a public opera- tion, not' a club; with contin- uous entertainment, Ralph will continue h|s Dallas enterprise, but^will commute frequently' | * Al Freeman, publicity, major domo of the Las Vegas Sands, called, all excited about his upcoming marriage to Miss Alice Metiar (Nov 15) of Vegas. Also that the: Sands had snared Frank Sinatra ?╟÷ who 'has some points in the hotel play?╟÷as first night dealer of hacarat. Al said : this is the first licensed .game of samev in this couhtry, imported from Europe. Frank claims Brigite Bardot taught him to play the game, and opening night, Nov. 20, he?╟╓ll pass on his knowledge to patrons. Personally, I?╟╓d rather learn first-hand from Brigite ...
