March 27, 1986 Dear Friends of the Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis: Today I write to honor and congratulate the Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis on the double simcha of the 16th anniversary and the dedication of the Mark and Anna Ruth Hasten wing of the Indianapolis Hebrew Academy. The central role played by the synagogue and education in Jewish life is well documented; the reason we have survived as a people is because we have always been the people of the Book. Jewish education acts as the link between, we the Jewish people, and our sacred text, the Bible and the Talmud. In every crisis and challenge Judaism has found contemporary answers in both its oral and written law. The Rabbis at Yavneh understood this. You in Indianapolis understand this today. It is in this context that this new *beit safer* must be appreciated. Jewish education teaches its people love of learning and love for the system of values whose foundation is this very same love of learning. The richness and beauty of Jewish culture and society stems from the legacy of learning and of character we leave through our children. Each Jewish child who progresses through a full Jewish education is equipped to flourish in all that life has to offer. That child has learned to grow, to love, to be free, and most importantly, to live as a Jew. With this in mind, the Hasten wing will be a special place where Jewish learning and values will grow into the foundation of new generations of the Jewish people of Indianapolis. I therefore congratulate the Hebrew Academy of Indianapolis and the Indianapolis Jewish Community on this great new expansion for Jewish teaching. I wish the synagogue a very happy 16th anniversary and offer these words as a tribute to the Hasten's great generosity which has helped make this possible.
