Call To Order CSUN Senate President Jack E. Spicer Jr., called Senate Meeting 19-3 to order in Beam Hall room 542 at 4:10pm. II. Roll Call Present Senator Kurzer Senator Saunders Senator Wilcox Senator Geihs (Late) Senator Hoferer Senator Polovina Senator Rosenberg Senator Bailey Senator Dreibelbis Senator Elliott Senator Gottschalk Senator Valenti Senator Walker Senator Bauhs Senator DaQuino Senator Demars Senator Hoffman Senator Colebrook Absent Senator Cozine (Excused) Senator Frankulin (Unexcused) III. Approval of Senate Minutes 19-2 Motion to approve Senate Minutes 19-2 and amend the motion to include approving Senate Minutes 19-1 by Senator Kurzer. Seconded by Senate President Pro Tempore Gottschalk. There was discussion. The following corrections were made: page 1, Article III. "CSUN Senate President Jack. E. Spicer Jr., gave his State of the Senate Address"; Page 9 paragraph eight "If it wasn't for them the handbook probably wouldn't have come out on time." Call for a vote-on the main motion and the corrections. Motion carried with Sixteen in favor, no opposed, and one abstention (Walker). Announcements CSUN Vice President Pro Tempore Miguel Palmieri announced that they had an NSLC meeting. They will be having the conference with students in high school that are from all over the state. The students will be staying in the dorms. Tuesday at 2:30pm will be the Organizations Board Meeting. He also announced that Victoria Von Tobel the NSA director resigned from her position. CSUN Senate President Pro Tempore Todd Gottschalk mentioned that he wrote a bylaw to have a Senate Retreat. He mentioned that it still needed to go to the Bylaws Committee. CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer mentioned that CSUN President Steve Evenson was in Reno for the Board of Regents meeting. CSUN President Jennifer McGinty was in her office having a conference. He announced that Law Day was fantastic. Tomorrow is the last chance for Senators to help out at a CSUN event. The Pep Rally will start at 12:3 0pm. V. Board and Committee Reports Dick Hubbel, OPI Director announced that Law Day was a big success. He mentioned that he had gone to Nellis Air Force Base and spoke to parents and kids interested in attending college at'oUNLV. Yellin' Rebel Advertising Manager Connie Scordato mentioned that the Yellin1 Rebel was doing fine. She also requested that a Publications Board Chair be elected soon. Video Yearbook Assistant Editor Trinity Reda mentioned that they would be filming at tomorrow's pep rally. KUNV, Director Rob Rosenthal mentioned that KUNV would be sponsoring Sampson's Army at Clamity Jaynes tonight. Senator Hoffman and chair for the Student Health Advisory Committee announced that there will be a meeting tomorrow at 3:00pm. CSUN Vice President Pro Tempore and Appropriations Board Chair, Miguel Palmieri announced that he wasn't getting financial reports from some of the departments. He thanked the departments that did give him their reports. Senate Minutes 19-3 11/17/88 Page 3 He also mentioned that if a situation arises like the one with Stacey Hanlon? Dr. Maxson mentioned that the person requesting to go on the conference should contact their department for finanical help on the trip. If the department can not fund the student to go on this conference, then they can see Vice President Unrue who has an account set aside for this type of financial aid. He also mentioned that the budget looks good. He also mentioned that so far CSUN has not spent as much as was projected for the semester. CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer announced that any Senator who has not told him what committee or board they would like to be on, needs to speak with him after the Senate Meeting. VI. Executive Board Nominations There were none. VII. Unfinished Business A. Nominations/Approval of Eductaion Seat. A. Jessie Young CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer nominated Stephanie Corcoran. Motion by Senator Dreibelbis to close nominations for the Education Seat. After which each candidate should speak to the Senate for two minutes, and then an election will be held and the top vote getter will be elected to the Education Seat. Seconded by Senator Bailey. Motion by Senator Walker to table for two weeks. Seconded by Senator Kurzer. Call for a vote. Motion carried with thirteen in favor, three opposed, and one abstention. VIII. New Business A. Approval of Executive Board Nominations. This motion was considered out of order. Senate Minutes 19-3 11/17/88 Page 4 VIII. New Business B. Introduction of Senate Bill #1. Motion by Senator Walker to refer Senate Bill #1 to the Bylaws Committee. Seconded by Senator Kurzer. There was no discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried, unanimously. Motion by Senator Kurzer to approve item C. and D. of New Business as a whole. C. Approval of Lonely Now Contract. D. Approval of $250 for advertising the Comedy Competition on February 13, 1989. Seconded by Senator DaQuino. There was discussion. Motion by Senator Kurzer to with draw his motion to approve items C. and D. as a whole and only approve item C. of New Business. C. Approval of Lonely Now Contract. Seconded by Senator Walker. There was discussion. Call for a vote. Motion carried, unanimously. XI. Open Discussion Senator Saunders mentioned that the reason that she was in CSUN was to get involved. She felt hurt that people thought that she was to involved and that they were also talking about her behind her back. She mentioned that if someone has something to say they should say it to her instead of others. Senator Valenti questioned why there weren't any Executive.board Nominations. Senate Minutes 19-3 11/17/88 Page 5 CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer announced that the reason for not having Executive Board Nominations was due to there being no Executive Board Meeting on Monday. Senator Polovina wished everyone a nice vacation. Senator Hoffman wished everyone a nice vacation. Senator Dreibelbis mentioned that this meeting was probably one of the meetings that he spoke about at the last Senate Meeting. Senator Bailey complained about the parking situtation. He felt that the weather sucked, but wished everyone a nice holiday. Senator Walker felt that the integrity of Senator DaQuino over the Publications Board situtation last week was compromised. Senators should investigate a situtation before they come into a Senate Meeting. Senator Geihs arrived at the meeting. Senator Geihs announced that he felt that this was a very productive meeting. He wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving and a Merry Christmas. Senator Wilcox mentioned that this a smooth and organized meeting. He wished everyone a Happy Thanksgiving. Senator DaQuino mentioned that there is a need for a Publications Board Chair. He also mentioned that he had an interview with the Yellin1 Rebel. Senator DeMars mentioned that he liked the chairs better at this meeting. He wished everyone a nice Thanksgiving. Senator Hoferer mentioned that she enjoyed working on the Senate and thanked everyone for excepting her. CSUN Vice President Pro Tempore Miguel Palmieri mentioned that he felt that things were pleasant when Steve wasn't around. He told everyone that there is a waiting list to get on the Appropriations Board. He mentioned that the library hours will be extended next semester. He also mentioned that he was waiting for signatures on the filing fees for the Senate Election. The two names he was waiting for were Chad Wilcox and Jeff Bauhs. Senate Minutes 19-3 11/17/88 Page 6 CSUN Vice President Pro Tempore Miguel Palmieri also commentted on the trip that he and CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer to Comdex in town. He also quoted CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer as saying, "screw class and let's go to Comdex." CSUN Senate President Pro Tempore Todd Gottschalk mentioned Senator Saunders always comes into the office and is very nice and cheerful. He also wanted everyone to write down what they wanted to do on the retreat to give him an idea for planning. He also was thinking about writing a bylaw to have the Executive Board have some kind of retreat. He also mentioned that he didn't feel that it was right for Senator DaQuino to tell the newspaper that CSUN was spending money on stupid things, because then the students get a negative idea of what student government is doing. CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer reminded the Senate that the SHAC meeting is tomorrow at 3pm. He mentioned that Law Day was fun. He also mentioned that he looks forward to Phil's lists at the Senate meeting. He also mentioned that the CSUN display that student government purchased was the most inexpensive one to be found. He awarded Dick Hubbel the best dressed awarded. He also mentioned that there wouldn't be a meeting next week. X. Adjournment CSUN Senate President Jack Spicer adjourned the Senate Meeting at 4:55pm.
