THE SPORTSMEN?╟╓S WORLD AWARDS As a nation of sportsmen, Americans respond enthusiastically to the crack of a bat, a dazzling broken-field runner, and the deft ball handling of a skilled playmaker. We are quick to cheer the standout performer, and give a measure of heady reverence to all who partici- pate in the spirit of fair play. It is fitting, then, that the Sportsmen?╟╓s Club for the City of Hope annually mounts one of the most distinguished honors programs, in paying tribute to those athletes whose achievements have stood the test of time. Their accom- plishments, on and off the playing fields, serve as an inspiration to today?╟╓s youth. The 1969 Sportsmen?╟╓s World Awards banquet, to honor a dozen athletes from around the world, will be held June 28 at the Sands Hotel, Las Vegas, Nevada. Recipients of the golden ?╟ Victor?╟╓ statu- ettes, symbolic of the Sportsmen?╟╓s World Award, are being chosen by a distinguished panel of more than one hundred leading sportswriters and sportscasters across the country. Entertainer Joey Bishop, as Master of Ceremonies, will be aided by other celebrities serving as guest presenters in each sports category. Suspense and anticipation is mount- ing, to see who will join the ranks of those previously honored by the Sports- men?╟╓s Club, among whom are: Carl Hubbell, George Mikan, Joe Louis, Tom Harmon, Gene Sarazen, Maurice Rich- ard, Jesse Owens, Duke Kahanamouku, Alice Marble, and legendary pitching great, Leroy ?╟ Satchel?╟╓ Paige. THE CITY OF HOPE Just as it is fitting for the Sportsmen?╟╓s Club to honor athletic greats of the past, it is doubly fitting that the proceeds from these awards festivities help strengthen and sustain the City of Hope National Medical Center. This free, nonsectarian medical and research complex is devoted to treatment,- research and education in the major catastrophic maladies of our times?╟÷ cancer, leukemia, and diseases of the heart, bloo.d, chest and heredity. Here, teams of physicians and researchers, nurses and social workers, take part in the contest to preserve life ?╟÷ to give the afflicted a chance to participate ?╟÷?╟≤ to go another inning, to stand tall and straight in the batter?╟╓s box. From its research laboratories have come many hundreds of original findings and discoveries influencing the practice of medicine around the world, while the City of Hope practices a unique kind of medicine aimed at restoring the whole person ... in mind ... in spirit... as well as in body. Throughout its 56-year history, no patient has ever paid for treatment at the City of Hope, regardless of the length of stay or complexity of treatment required. The Sportsmen?╟╓s Club is dedicated to glorifying athletes as the City of Hope helps relieve pain and suffering, and glorifies the individual. That?╟╓s the way they play the game . . . for the team . . . for all of mankind!
