LAS VEGAS REVIEW JOURNAL P u b l i s h e d _______Sr-K i& 1948 Parley Set Here Td Forestall Another 'Drouth' tho Wat,er us,e -restrictions due to go off in Las Vegas within the next week or 10 days, George Allard, chairman of the Nevada ! public service commission set the wheels in motion this morning to msure against a recurrence of the shortage which has forced residents of this city to curtail consumption throughout the summer months. . As the community entered the sixtieth day of rigid regulation of water use for irrigation purposes, Allard scheduled a conference for Las Vegas on October 11 to go over plans of the Las Vegas Land and Water com-1 pany for improving the system ltd ' provide sufficient pressure I and supply to take care of the j need before another summer ar- ! fives. j At the same time A1 Folger, general manager for the water company, stated he felt certain that by the middle or latter part of next week, peak consumption will have receded sufficiently to permit complete relaxation of ah -restrictions and that n o t i c e 1 would be given in advance. Allard said the October meet- ;ing would probably be held ini the commissioners’ chambers in the city hall, beginning at 10 l o’clock, and that the full mem- i bership of his board would b e 1 present including, A. M. Smith,! state engineer, and Charles V. Williams. Hugh Shamberger, as-! sistant to Smith, will be present! ?in an advisory capacity. Allard said he had been advised the water company was1 prepared to present' proposals1 for sinking additional wells and! constructing additional m a i n s ! which they felt would take care f of any demands-that might be! made on the local utility for Sev-' eral years. [ He said further he planned to-invite Mayor E. W. Cragin and other interested city officials, members of the board of directors of the Las Vegas valley ' water district, chamber of com- Imerce representatives, and in-, jterested water users to be praffe Jent. “ We are interested,” A llard * j said, “ not only in getting the : water company’s ideas but in i getting at the core of the whole ] problem. • “ The time has come when Las Vegas must plan for the future land our commission proposes to [act as an agency whereby that can be done. “ I would like to stress the fact thisjLS an informal conference, but on the other hand it is our desire that everybody be heard who may have anything ito offer. i “ Legally, we are concerned only with the ability of the ex-ifisting utility to give proper service and seeing- that they do ]so,” the chairman pointed out. [“ However, from a practical [standpoint, I feel ®re can pro-jvide the means for a free and open discussion of the whole problem after hearing what, the [water company i t s e l f has [planned.” i Officials of the utility indicated |they, were a little uncertain as Ito their own future in the pic-jture because of the formation |of .the water district and the possibility of absorption of the Lag Vegas city system in the it overall plans for augmenting the ?! supply through tapping L a k e 1 Mead;. This was expected to be dis- | cussed during the October meet-ling, Allard indicated.
