Giro's Reopens With Robert Vocalizing ?╟≤*S&e *?½/c A ... ??r?╟ ??On ***?? L,s* Kirk SWS By AUDREY KEARNS Glamor has returned to the [Sunset Strip! For this'week saw the re-opening of Frank Sonnes?╟╓ Giro?╟╓s with that terri- fic singer and entertainer, [Roberta Sherwood, starred. Roberta?╟╓s own singing style is so exciting that she even makes such oldies as ?╟úYou Tell Me Your Dream,?╟Ñ ?╟úI?╟╓m Alabamy Bound?╟Ñ and ?╟úDown a Lazy River?╟Ñ sound new, and nostalgic. Of course, her wond- erful ?╟úCry Me a River?╟Ñ is just as stirring today as it was when I first heard her sing it almost four years ago, As Walter Winchell said when he introduced her: Roberta Sher wood is a personality and a great, ope., ?√ß Actually, Roberta?╟╓s a person ality in her own right, so it?╟╓s difficult for me to think of her [as ?╟újust a singer.?╟Ñ Raised in the . theatrical world since childhood, Roberta has a spe- cial professional approach to entertaining that is helping to make her one of the country?╟╓s favorite supper club and re cording artists. There is a feeling of effervescency about PiBi fM * er, son igs j u*icaI fzste Roberta when she sings, does an ?╟úoff-to-Buffalo?╟Ñ or just stands on the stage at Giro s introducing her guitarist,. Red Newmark and pianist Ernest DeLorerizq. Though both she and her son, Don Lanning, try to maintain, an impersonal atti tude when she introduces Him for a couple of sorrgs, . the pride of being a mother shows through, as it should. Don was nervous fdr his first number but his second showed real strength. Roberta did a couple of real ?╟úrock ?╟╓n?╟╓ roll?╟Ñ numbers which were ?╟úswinging,?╟Ñ ?╟úCheatin?╟╓ Heart?╟Ñ and ?╟úWreak of the 98?╟Ñ New numbers from ?╟úTake Me Along?╟Ñ included the title song, ?√ß?╟ Wherever Y o u Go?╟Ñ and ?╟úStaying Young,?╟Ñ as well as ?╟ Small World?╟Ñ from ?╟úGypsy.?╟Ñ Opening the show was Don Arden?╟╓s revue of 16 beautiful girls wearing eye-ball drop- ping costumes| especially de- lightful was specialty dancer Wilda Taylor?╟╓s ?╟úFunny Valen tine?╟Ñ routine. Roberta Sings Well, But a Bit Too Long In opening her two-week eugagement at Clr o?╟╓ s Thursday night, Roberta Sherwood failed the old show business dictum* ?╟úAl- ways leave them wanting more/' Miss Sherwood extended the effective signoff point by half a dozen songs. As usual, the matronly singer made her entrance from the table area belting out a song as she made her way to the stage. Known for her warm, captivating stage aplomb, Miss Sherwood reaches her audience through an ex- tensive repertoire. There are hillbilly, Dixieland, blues and romantic ballads. Her metier seems to be the up-beat jazzier stylings, although her most effective tune opening night was ?╟úYou?╟╓re Nobody Until Some- body Loves You.?╟Ñ In some selections, she accompanies herself with a cymbal; others are backed I by a three-piece combo that travels wih her. Ro- berta?╟╓s effervescence is oftentimes manifested in bits of rock ?╟╓n?╟╓ roll or soft shoe. ?╟úUp a Lazy River,?╟Ñ her sign on, was greeted strong- ly as were ?╟úWherever He Goes?╟Ñ and ?╟úI Need Your Love.?╟Ñ ?╟úGirl of My Dreams?╟Ñ pleasantly teamed the sing- er with her son, a good looking lad exuding his mother?╟╓s personality. Perhaps it was the excite- ment of opening on the ?╟úStrip?╟Ñ or too many friends in the audience that ac- counted for her too long (around 30) song stay. Also featured on the pro- gram is Prof. Backwards, a glib-tongued comic. Production Singer Don Chastain and a dozen Bonn Arden dancing girls start the show on a fast, colorful tempo. ?╟÷o, D, NOW STARRING . . . 4-6650 LISA KIRK WITH THE 4 SAINTS In the L.A, debut of her scintillating new show! i PLUS DONN ARDEN?╟╓S CONTINENTAL REVUI OWNERS FROM $5.50 ...
