Non-member adults may attend at a cost of $90 per person. The seder begins at 6:30 PM. Please RSVP prior to April 5 by calling the Temple office at 804-1333, ext. 103. TBS Annual Gala at The Stardust on May 21 This year our Gala, Honoring Ellis Landau, Man of the Year will be held at the Stardust Hotel, with Jon Ralston serving as Master of Ceremonies. This is a fitting location, as Ellis is the retiring CFO of Boyd Gaming and it gives us the opportunity to have one of the last community dinners at the famous "Stardust". Not only is Ellis retiring, but the Stardust will be imploded at the end of'06. Please join us in thanking Ellis for his dedication and hard work on the finances of our capital campaigns and for his generosity to the Temple. Our Warsaw Memorial Garden is dedicated in honor of him and his wife, Yvette. We invite you to attend the dinner and help with our auction and journal. Please call Julie in the Temple office at 804-1333, ext 103 for more information. Audrey Merkin, Temple Executive Board Member, dies March 3 O u r Te m p1e, the Jewish community and the Las Vegas community have all lost a great friend. Audrey had been a member of TBS since childhood, over 50 years. Throughout her adult years, she took on many humanitarian projects that benefitted families all over the valley. She ran the Passover Pantry program, seeing to it that needy families could enjoy a kosher Passover dinner and helped fund and deliver 700 Easter Baskets to needy Las Vegas children. She was involved with the LDor V'Dor senior outreach program. Audrey was a Women's League board member and a tireless fundraiser. Her last projects were the Mishloach Manot and the Israeli Art Sale; and its success far exceeded our expectations. Audrey was active in Republican politics, serving as chairman of the National Committee of Women in Politics, as a delegate to five Republican National Conventions and traveling to Taiwan and Eastern Europe as an observer of the political process for the RNC. Because of her love of Israel and children, her friends are establishing a scholarship program to help send a teenager to Israel each summer. To raise money for the Audrey Merkin Israel Scholarship Fund, a Mah Jong Tournament and luncheon will be held annually. Beth Sholom Bulletin Amazing Little Country by Edward Seltzer (Without a source, a friend of mine sent this information listed below and I thought it was ?worth forwarding.) he Middle East has been growing date palms for centuries. The average tree is about 18-20 feet tall and yields about 38 pounds of dates a year. Israeli date trees are now yielding 400 pounds per year and are short enough to be harvested from the ground or a short ladder. Israel, the 100th smallest country, with less than 1/1000th of the world's popula-tion, can lay claim to the following: The cell phone was developed in Israel by Israelis working in the Israeli branch of Motorola, which has its largest develop-ment center in Israel. Most of the Windows NT and XP oper-ating systems were developed by Micro-soft- Israel. The Pentium MMX Chip technology was designed in Israel at Intel. Both the Pentium-4 microprocessor and the Centrino processor were entirely de-signed, developed and produced in Isra-el. The Pentium microprocessor in your computer was most likely made in Israel. Voice mail technology was developed in Israel. Both Microsoft and Cisco built their only R&D facilities outside the U.S. in Israel. The technology for the AOL Instant Messenger ICQ was developed in 1996 by four young Israelis. Israel has the fourth largest air force in the world (after the United States, Russia and China). In addition to a large variety of other aircraft, Israel's air force has an aerial arsenal of over 250 F-16's. This is the largest fleet of F-16 aircraft outside of the United States. Israel's $100 billion economy is larger than all of its immediate neighbors com-bined. Israel has the highest percentage in the world of home computers per capita. According to industry officials, Israel de-signed the airline industry's most impen-etrable flight security. US. officials now look (finally) to Israel for advice on how to handle airborne security threats. Israel has the highest ratio of university degrees to the population in the world. Israel produces more scientific papers per capita than any other nation by a large margin - 109 per 10,000 people - as well as one of the highest per capita rates of patents filed. In proportion to its population, Israel has the largest number of startup companies in the world. In absolute terms, Israel has the largest number of startup companies than any other country in the world, ex-cept the U.S. (3,500 companies mostly in hi-tech). With more than 3,000 high-tech com-panies and startups, Israel has the high-est concentration of hi-tech companies in the world - apart from the Silicon Valley, U.S. Israel is ranked # 2 in the world for ven-ture capital funds right behind the United States. Outside the United States and Canada, Israel has the largest number of NAS-DAQ listed companies. Israel has the highest average living stan-dards in the Middle East. The per capita income in 2000 was over $17,500, exceed-ing that of the United Kingdom. On a per capita basis, Israel has the largest number of biotech startups. Twenty-four per cent of Israel's workforce holds university degrees, ranking third in the industrialized world, after the United States and Holland; and 12 percent hold advanced degrees. In 1984 and 1991, Israel airlifted a to-tal of 22,000 Ethiopian Jews (Operation Solomon) at risk in Ethiopia, to safety in Israel. When Golda Meir was elected Prime Minister of Israel in 1969, she became the world's second elected female leader in modern times. Israel has the third highest rate of entre-preneurship - and the highest rate among women and among people over 55 - in the world. 2 Cantor April 2006 Nissan-lyar 5766 Pesach is a time of great sacrifices. Whenever I mention Passover to my wife looks at me with a glare and says," So, you're going to turn my beautiful kitchen upside down again." To which I reply with a glee-ful glint in my eye, ""Yes. Of course. Don't worry. It will be fun." This always happens just about three weeks prior to Pesach. I put in a CD of Pesach music and, while listening to the dulcet tones of "Go Down Moses," I start cleaning every closet, every cupboard, and every shelf, everything in our house. Over time, perhaps out of my gleeful per-sistence, my wife joins with me and we celebrate the changing of the seasons from winter to spring. We sing and prepare for Pesach, cleaning our home. Oye, what a chore. Then on top of everything, after all this hard labor, we sell our chametz and stock Capital Campaign Dear Friends, The Capital Campaign to build the Fried-man Family Multi-Generational Pavilion continues to move forward. In March, the first of several parlor meetings was held at the home of Blanche and Phil Meisel. We were fortunate to have Chancellor Ismar Schorsch speak about the importance of Jew-ish education in our community and around the world. His words inspired attendees to commit to our capital campaign. To date we have raised close to 3.5 million dollars. Plans for the Pavilion continue to be refined by the Building Committee. The gymna-sium/ theatre/multi-use space will provide opportunities for large group activities in-cluding holiday and Simcha celebrations, EDor V'Dor, art performances and sports programs. A variety of classroom and the house with the oh-so-delicious delica-c i e yf of Pesach. Matzah and prunes jf? J* j and macaroons and everything we can stuff into our systems to keep our systems stuffed. This is the celebration of freedom? Yes. Yes. Yes, and I love it. Through all of the chal-lenges Pesach presents to us (and I believe Pesach to be the most challenging, even more so than having to build a Sukkah), I love this Holy Week. I love Pesach because I am not allowed to forget one of the most basic and simple stories of our entire history as Jewish people and for that matter one of the most basic God given rights of all hu-man beings that of celebrating freedom and our ability to be free in this era of hu manity. So, we put up with a little clean-ing and gastric challenges to be here today as Jews, free. Whenever I begin the process of Pesach and hear the music of Pesach I am reminded of this journey, we, as a people, Jewish and free, have set upon and continue to travel. Freedom carries with it an awe-some responsibility. This is not something that is lost on us as viewed in our world today. Observing Pesach is part of our re-sponsibility as free Jews. If we let go of this responsibility we risk letting go of our free-dom as Jews, as Americans. Sing to your children the songs of Pesach, attend a Seder, clean your house, and buy Pesach products. It's just a week, talk to the Rabbi about how you can make Pesach just a little more spe-cial than last year. As always, I look for-ward to seeing you at Temple. meeting spaces will provide endless oppor-tunities for people of all ages to gather for educational, social and cultural activities. A variety of giving and dedication levels have been developed by the Campaign Commit-tee to encourage participation from a wide spectrum of our congregants. We encourage you to contact one of us or our Rabbi or Ex-ecutive Director to explore which level may be most suitable for your family. It was the best carnival yet and we are so grate-ful to Marci Seltzer and her Purim Car-nival Committee for all their hard work. The third and final trimester of Midra-sha kicked off on Thursday, March 16th. March closed with our Kitah Bet (2nd) Class Dinner & Service on Friday, March 31 st. They performed wonderfully and our thanks go out to our Tefillah Teacher (Fran Bromley-Norwood) and our Religious School Teachers (Ornit Gordon and Libby Gold-stein Parker) for all their hard work in prepa-ration. During the course of the year, all our Re-ligious School grades will take a turn in leading services. Please don't miss these special opportunities to watch our children show off what they have learned and to shed a little naches! April will be jam-packed with excitement! The Religious School will have its annual Passover Seder Celebration on Sunday, April 2nd. After a nice break, we will return with a commemoration of Yom Ha'Shoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) on Mon-day, April 24th and finish the month with a huge Yom Ha'Atzmaut (Israeli Indepen-dence Day) on Sunday, April 30th. 4 Last chance to purchase your Gladia-tor Arena Football tickets for April 2nd. On March 5th, Kadima members went to the Las Vegas Ice Center to go ice skating. Tons of fun was had by all - even first timers quickly adjusted to the slippery ice and skated their way around the rink! As the Kadimaniks at their pizza and sipped their drinks, they were able to get to know each other a little bit better and are looking forward to their next event!!! Also on March 5th, Jr USY-ers (Brooke Mitchell, Matt Shapiro, Adam Frye, and Jadin Tredup) had a blast at Laser Quest. It did not matter what place they came in, fun was had by all who attended the event. We hope to have more Jr. USYers at our next event. Don't forget to reserve your tickets for the play, I Never Saw Another Butter-fly, through the Religious School Office. All youth and their families are invited to join us on April 16th at 2:00 p.m. at the Read Whipple Studio Theatre. Tickets range in price from $3.00 - $7.00. We will be meeting at Panini's Kosher Cafe immediately following. The process of reviewing existing pro-grams and determining what our adult education needs are is ongoing. We are currentiy hard at work on next year's Adult Education schedule of classes. We would love more input from the con-gregation. Please call Jessica Espero at extension 114 if you would like to find out more information about the commit-tee. Solomon Schechter The Solomon Schechter Day School of Las Vegas is extremely pleased to an-nounce the creation of a $100,000 schol-arship endowment fund. The purpose of this fund is to assure that families need not choose between finances and a high-quality Schechter education. "We are philosophically committed to provid-ing access to all families - not only those capable of paying full tuition," says Jon Mitzmacher, Head of School. "We con-sider it a Jewish value of the highest or-der to be able to provide our exceptional educational program to as many families as we can. Between this new fund and Federation's new Community Scholar-ship Fund, Las Vegas Jewish families will now have the luxury of choosing a Jewish Day School based only on how well it provides for their children's edu-cational needs." Solomon Schechter celebrated Nevada Reading Week with a return engage-ment of its Kindergarten Reading Bud-dies Program. Every week is "reading" week in Solomon Schechter as students and parents will clearly attest to. Wheth-er it is in Hebrew or English, students in Education B'Nai Mitzvot Schechter are encouraged to read and read they do. Many a student has been known to sneak a flashlight under the covers in order to finish that next chapter! Teachers take pride in instilling a love for reading in their students and weeks like "Nevada Reading Week" offer an opportunity to publicize and celebrate that love. Fittingly, it was during this week, on Thursday, March 2nd that SSDS First Graders took the opportunity to return to Kindergarten to read and be read to. A wonderful afternoon was had by all and plans for yet another return engagement are already in the works! In addition, the SSDS-LV is currently booking private tours as part of its ongo-ing enrollment activities. Don't miss this chance to see the school, meet the teachers, and experience a taste of Schechter's unique educational approach. As part of its com-mitment to small class sizes, enrollment is expected to close at fifteen for each of its four grades. Besides welcoming a new class of students, limited spaces will be available for next year's Second and Third Grades. Please call the Schechter office if you are in-terested and would like to take a tour. For further information on the Solomon Schech-ter Day School contact Jon Mitzmacher at (702) 804-1333 ext. 114. Our fabulous teachers will guide a series of lessons that will encourage the children to experience the work of each artist through different mediums. Each artist will be brought to life through stories, pictures and related lesson plans by their teachers. While learning about Michelangelo, the children gleefully had the opportunity to lay on their backs and paint. This experience allowed the children to see how it felt to paint just like a great "Master" of art. As the series progresses, each class will display the children's work in a museum format. Come visit the Temple and kvell with us over the exciting and innovative specialty series we offer. Mrs. Nikki Avery, teacher of music and creative movement, will integrate special creative movement exercises and related themed music to coincide with the children's study of the artists' work.
