Our new student Rabbi, Kim Ettlinger, will lead this year's program. The program, entitled "A Time for Reflection; a Time for Personal Growth?, will be an engaging discussion on the meaning of the High Holydays and the Power of Repentance. Open to the entire community. //? Sukkot Morning Service Thursday, September 30th Beginning at 10 am V----------- -----------V Shalom, Wow, it's hard to believe that September is here. That means two things. High Holidays and the Shabbatones return. Besides the hustle and bustle of a busy summer, getting the kids ready for school (and yourself), plus getting all those projects done around the house, our thoughts begin to turn to the High Holidays. This month I thought I would talk a little about the music for our High Holiday Services: it's roots and what goes into preparing for these Holy Days. You hear the finished product at Services, but here is some background about the music. Nusach is a term for a particular musical mode or melody. Each and every service in Judaism has it's own particular musical theme or nusach i.e. Weekday Services, Shabbat Evening, Shabbat Morning, Festival and High Holidays. Which means that most every prayer chanted during each of these services has a different melody depending on the holiday. However, the only time you would probably hear an entire service chanted with nusach would be at an Orthodox or Conservative Synagogue. Even so, I believe a Cantor from any movement should know the nusach for each and every prayer and holiday to truly understand the roots of our musical heritage. I have tried to bring a variety of different styles of music to our Congregation. You will hear some nusach, some of the melodies the Rabbi or I grew up with, and also some of the more contemporary compositions at most of our services. This year you will hear a traditional High Holiday melody for the Chatzi Kaddish. You will probably recognize this melody as several other prayers are chanted very similarly due to the nusach of the High Holidays. Our Adult Choir has been working since July to prepare for the High Holiday Services and I hope you will take the time to let them know that they are appreciated. I also welcome any feedback on the musical choices I have made and hope that you enjoy and are moved by this music. As we approach the New Year and Yom Kippur, we need help in attaining change in ourselves. I hope that we can help facilitate personal growth and continue to attract so many people to our vision in the months to come. I wish everyone a happy and healthy new year! B'Shalom Philip Goldstein Cantorial Soloist 2 www. Ivnertam id .org "Off to College: A Time of Parental Transition" The fall marks the time for transitions of many kinds. As families we say good bye to the summer and hello to the fall; good bye to vacation and hello to the start of school. This year in particular that transition has special personal significance as my daughter CJ leaves to go to college at the University of Arizona. Like many of you I have found myself becoming reflective, thinking back to the time when she was a baby, her first day in kindergarten, her Bat Mitzvah and other milestone events. And yet, while I viewed each of those events as milestones in my daughter's life, this particular one seems also to be a milestone in my life. I confess I haven't quite figured out what this milestone means quite yet. Perhaps it is the first inkling that I am getting older. Or that there is a transition of generations that is just now beginning. Filled with a mixture of pride as my daughter takes her next steps towards independence, and sadness, knowing that in the years to come visits home will be just that "visits", I find my feelings filled with loving ambiguity. Those of you who have already been through this process I am sure are smiling knowingly as you read this column. I have had a lot of people come up to me and ask me, "so how are YOU doing?" I am not sure what the response should be. It seems too simplistic to respond, "I'm doing Ok". But in the end, this transition in my life, in my wife's life, and that of our daughter CJ (not to mention our son Sam who is looking forward to having his "own bathroom"-hmm if only life were that simple!) is as it should be, yet another opportunity to embrace the texture and tenderness of life's pacing. "A time", as the Bible teaches us, " for everything under heaven. " As we observe yet another New Year, may it be for you and yours a time of sweetness and joy, filled with an appreciation of all of life's blessings. Especially when one of those blessings is your father or fciother; your husband; your wife; your son; or your daughter. Because ultimately the greatest blessing that we have is the time we have with those we love and how we choose to live that time together. L'shana Tova! Rabbi Sanford Akselrad Taking your Judaism with You...... Hillel, the largest Jewish college campus organization in the world, the foundation for Jewish campus life, provides opportunities for Jewish students to explore and celebrate their Jewish identity through its global network of over 500 regional centers, campus Foundations and Hillel student organizations. Hillel is working to provoke a renaissance of Jewish life. Hillel's mission is to maximize the number of Jews doing Jewish with other Jews. Hillel actively seeks to engage uninvolved Jewish students on their own terms: to provide them with opportunities to do Jewish things that are meaningful and appealing to them. Students are empowered to take responsibility for their Jewish identity, whether they wish to participate in a community service project, express themselves artistically, participate in a social event, engage in informal Jewish learning or attend religious services. Any student may participate in Hillel - no membership is required. Hillel is committed to a pluralistic vision of Judaism that embraces all movements. As you go off to college this fall, please take the time to check them out on your campus or on line at www.hillel.org. September 2 00 4 3 Excitement at CNT ? and Thank You! We have many exciting events taking place here at CNT in the very near future, aside from High Holidays right around the corner. One of these events is very special, and I want Jn share it with you. ^ As you all know, we have been working towards our new buildings and campus - the designing as well as fund-raising aspects. We have just completed the latest version of our floorplans and overviews of our new campus, and want to share these with everyone. Therefore, we are making a special announcement and presentation of the new "boards" for the entire congregation to view, learn about and discuss. Looking forward to seeing everyone at one (or both) of these wonderful presentations. And, let me also say "Thank you" to all of our wonderful congregants who are making donations to help us all accomplish this vision of a future campus for "Jewish Life, Learning and Spiritual Renewal". Happy and a Healthy New Yearto All! To clarify the Temple's policy, 75% of your Annual Commitment must be paid in order to receive your High Holy Day Tickets. This means 75% of your Annual Dues plus 75% of this year's Building Fund Commitment. For example: If your Building Fund Assessment Total were $2,500 (your full 5 year commitment), you would need to have a minimum of $375 paid towards your 2004 BF Commitment ($2,500 divided by 5=$500 X 75%=$375). If your Annual Dues were $2000, you would also need to have a minimum of $1,500 paid towards your 2004 Annual Dues ($2,000 X 75%=$ 1,500). In total, you would need to have $1,875 paid towards your 2004 Annual Commitment in order to receive your High Holy Day Tickets. (These are only examples; your actual Commitment amounts may differ.) If you have any questions or need to speak about any of these numbers, please feel free to contact Irv in the temple office. v__________________________________________________________________________________________ Join us! As we gather, we begin to catch up on what our friends and family have been doing all summer. So, I am going to tell you what I did on my summer vacation. Ours was a typical summer - our children were leaving for camp two weeks after school let out. Sandy and I were looking forward to a whole month of just us. Well, you know the best-laid plans do not work out and we were actually apart most of the summer. But in the midst of all this, we had to pick Ben up from Camp Newman, a U.R.J. camp in Santa Rosa, CA, for two days between sessions. And a certain past cantor of CNT lives 60 miles from Santa Rosa. So Sandy and I decided to call Bella & Michael and ask if they would like visitors for two days. Now I assured them we had a hotel but thought since it was July 4th weekend, we could picnic or just hang out. Well of course they said yes and our plans were set. The two days passed like a blur but we had a great time. They are doing wonderful in their new venture. I learned all about the flour milling business, about life in a small town, and how Bella is helping out at the local synagogue with what she does best, her music. But most importantly they are happy and their children are happy. The reason I have told this story is as the High Holidays approach, we will catch up with family and friends when we see each other at temple. Ours is an extended family at CNT and we need to stay in contact and appreciate all the wonderful friendships CNT has given to us. Just like the special friendship we renewed this summer. So enjoy and appreciate your entire extended family this holiday season. Sandy, Megan, Benjamin and I would like to wish everyone an easy fast and a La Shana Tovah - a good and healthy New Year! September 2004 11 dV ; ; J $ g . |]| \> i , I 111 lllll 11 mmmmm In a few short weeks we will begin a new year and celebrate Rosh Hashanah. During this time, our lives become an open book as we evaluate our conduct and look toward the cul?mination of the High Holyday season with Yom Kippur. Sisterhood is also kicking into "high gear? as we evalu?ate the previous year and look forward to the future. Sisterhood's future will include some new and exciting programs and fundraisers, as well as a new attendance incentive program I am developing called the Echad Initiative. The Echad Initiative is a concept, a belief, that one (echad) per?son can make a difference. I know that you cannot be at every event and meeting, but I ask each of you to think about what is important to you ... what fulfills you . . . and give Sisterhood a chance to be a part of your life by participating as much as you can during the coming year. I hope you will take the initiative to attend at least one (echad) more program, one (echad) more event, or volunteer one (echad) more time than you did last year. Help us to continue support?ing the Jewish community, by being part of the Sisterhood com?munity. This concept is best expressed by Rabbi Hillel who once said, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? But if I am for myself alone, what am I?" By this he meant each person must take care of him or her self before they can take care of other people. He also knew that no person could live completely alone. We are depen?dent upon one another. At Sisterhood we recognize this need and represent it through our mission statement. Many voices, many hands - Today's women embracing a shared vision. We are all part of a community, but it is not just any commu?nity; it is a Jewish community, Klal Yisrael. As we look toward the new year, I invite all Sisterhood Mem?bers and CNT Members to join us in the Social Hall immedi?ately following Religious School Orientation on Sunday, September 12, @ 11 am. Your help would be appreciated preparing bags of apples and honey to be distr
