SCOTT Many outstanding revues have graced the stage of the Moulin Rouge in Hollywood, both under the late Earl Carroll's aegis and the banner of its current enterprising owner, Prank Sennes. I have seen most of the footlight extravaganzas presented there since opening night in December of 1938, and am happy to report that "Wonderful World," Anna Maria which arrived Thursday night, rates right at the top of the list. It's truly a great show. The spectacular production, starring beauteous Anna Maria Alberghetti, is a tribute to Donn Arden, who staged and directed it; to Bonnie Hunt and Larry Maldonado, choreographers; to the costume designer, Madame Berthe; to Harvey Warren, who designed scenery; ond to Jack Haves and Rubv Ras- ian lullaby. She scored a tremendous hit with her recap of former Broadway notables, danced gracefully and proved to be a fine all - a r o u n d entertainer. Her mother, in a surprise appearance, played boogie woogie on the piano. Various notables came on stage Thursday night after the finale number and congratulated Sennes, Arden, Miss Alberghetti and the entire cast. Berle, Davis Jr., Durante and Lewis indulged in some comical sideplay. SWEETEST MUSIC Guy Lombardo's music- making style ?╟÷ wailing reeds, slow tempo except for brief excursions into Dixieland two-beat?╟÷is the phenomenon of the band business. It has been for many, many years. Controversial, too. Through the jazz, swing, progressive and rock 'nf roll cycles, Lombardo has stuck to his guns and recorded the greatest popular band success in history. Guy and his music men with Soloist Kenny Gardner, The Three Petticoats (a sweet singing, swinging girl trio) and Comedian Jackie Kannon are currently headlining the Co- coanut Grove's new show. This marks Lombardo's first date at the Grove, where he was a great favorite, in 10 years. A crowd of happy middle- agers welcomed him back. Los Angeles, Caltf. Those patrons familiar with Sennes' past offerings will be interested to know that he and producer Arden have achieved a seemingly impossible assignment?╟÷topping their previous shows for splash effect and production quality. Spectacular The open purse method employed so successfully by Sennes in previous years is once again put to use witt spectacular results. He esti-| mates that a quarter of million dollars have beer spent on the new revue, plud another $50,000 for his panoramic staging. i This new idea finds the au-' dience half surrounded by stages with one on the right arched out over the band^ area and used mostly for dis-s play purposes and a like area) being built on the other side of the theater. With this vast staging area; Producer Arden has been' able to achieve some spec-, tacular effects, especially in the opening routine, a fast moving, splashy tribute to the west, "Americana." It has an outdoor, cowboy theme and the costumes defy description. Also well adapted to the huge stage is the finale, "Af- ricana," which, as the title
